  • On the Semantic Representation of Oblique Complements

    James E Hoard•ARTICLE•Language•1979•Citada por: 2

Dependency network representations, which eliminate the need for transformations, are proposed as a means for showing the essential semantic relationships among the components of sentences, especially those that contain oblique complements (including by -phrases). Evidence from Quileute, a Northwest American Indian language, provides strong support for the position, advanced by Langacker & Munro 1975, that passive sentences are basically agentles…

  • English Irregular Verbs

    James E Hoard, Clarence Sloat•ARTICLE•Language•1973•Citada por: 2

Surface alternations of English strong verbs suggest that they are highly irregular, and form at best a large number of small unrelated classes. But theoretical innovations, utilizing a markedness approach to characterize morphological irregularity, lead to the conclusion that these verbs are much more regular than they seem, and can be described in terms of seven conjugation classes. Six of the seven conjugation classes share, with minor variati…

  • Aspiration, Tenseness, and Syllabication in English

    James E Hoard•ARTICLE•Language•1971•Citada por: 9

English aspiration in initial and medial position is shown to be part of a larger phenomenon of tense and lax consonant alternations. The alternations are accounted for in the context of a set of syllabication rules. These rules precede rules that tense initial consonants of stressed syllables, assimilate tautosyllabic consonants, and lengthen final vowels
