  • On naming and definiteness: New evidence from Martinique Creole

    Open Access•Anne Zribi-Hertz, Loïc Jean-Louis•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•2026

Describing a modern variety of Martinique Creole spoken by French-Creole bilinguals, we show that this language uses two different subgrammars to express ‘definiteness’, viz to signal a uniqueness presupposition on a discourse referent: (i) the enclitic determiner - la , arguably located in a phrase-peripheral D head which has been shown by Térosier ( 2021 , 2022 ) to convey two subtypes of discourse-linking; (ii) a dedicated morphosyntax for nou…

  • The syntax of directional Serial Verb Constructions in French-based creoles

    Open Access•Anne Zribi-Hertz, Loïc Jean-Louis•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•2022

This article bears on directional Serial Verb Constructions (SVCs) in French-based creoles. Starting with a working definition of our topic of study, we present a detailed description of the data in Martinican Creole (MQ) – whose grammar is similar in the relevant respects to that of Haitian (HC). Four different structural patterns are distinguished. Our results bring partial support to Aboh’s (2015) assumption that the emergence of Haitian SVCs …

  • Verb cognates in Haitian Creole

Herby Glaude, Anne Zribi-Hertz•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2014

This article bears on three “verb cognate” (VC) constructions attested in Haitian Creole, where the verb and a homonymous replica of the verb cooccur within the same clausal domain. In the first two constructions – VC1 and VC2 – the verb's cognate is crucially unstressed and supports further lexical material, while in the third construction – VC3, which subsumes the subcase known as

  • Crosslinguistic Studies on Noun Phrase Structure and Reference

Patricia Cabredo Hofherr, Anne Zribi-Hertz•BOOK•Crosslinguistic Studies on Noun…•2013

Crosslinguistic Studies on Noun Phrase Structure and Reference contains 11 studies on the grammar of noun phrases. Part One explores NP-structure and the impact of information structure, countability and number marking on interpretation, using data from Russian, Armenian, Hebrew, Brazilian Portuguese, Karitiana, Turkish, English, Catalan and Danish. Part Two examines language specific definiteness marking strategies in spoken and signed languages…

Les pronoms sont couramment conçus comme une « partie du discours » définie en termes de substitution : un pro-nom est « mis pour un nom. » Cette définition est démentie par les résultats des travaux empiriques, dans la mesure où certains pronoms oc…

  • Differential Function Marking, Case, and Information Structure: Evidence from Korean

    Open Access•Song-Nim Kwon, Anne Zribi-Hertz•ARTICLE•Language•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The central goal of this article is to propose a systematic description of differental function marking (DM) in Korean, a language in which both subject and object markers may fail to be spelled out. Taking Aissen's theory of DM (Aissen 2003) as a starting point, we show that although its predictions seem mostly consistent with the statistical results of corpus-based research on Korean (and Japanese), this model does not accurately account for th…

  • La pluralisation des pronoms de dialogue: Benveniste face au coréen

    Song-Nim Kwon, Anne Zribi-Hertz•ARTICLE•Modèles linguistiques•2007

  • On the dual nature of the ‘possessive’ marker in Modern English

    Open Access•Anne Zribi-Hertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1997•Cited by: 8

This paper shows, after Watkins (1967) and Tremblay (1989, 1991), that the possessive phrase of This is John's does not necessarily include an elliptical Possessee. This ambiguity is argued to arise from the dual nature of the possessive marker, which may either be inflectional or derivational in Modern English. In the first case, it may be analysed as a functional head, as proposed by Abney (1987) and Kayne (1993, 1994); in the second case, it o…

  • Emphatic or reflexive? On the endophoric character of French lui-méme and similar complex pronouns

    Open Access•Anne Zribi-Hertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1995•Cited by: 9•References: 7

This study examines the referential properties of a class of complex pronouns labelled M-PRONOUNS, exemplified by Old English HIMSELF, French LUI-MéME and English HISOWN. It is shown that M-pronouns exhibit some properties commonly taken as characterizing reflexive anaphors, and that they also occur as ‘intensive’ pronouns. It is shown, however, that they are not anaphors, and that labelling them ‘intensives’ does not suffice to account for their…

  • Anaphor Binding and Narrative Point of View: English Reflexive Pronouns in Sentence and Discourse

    Anne Zribi-Hertz•ARTICLE•Language•1989•Cited by: 31

This paper offers a detailed survey of occurrences of English reflexive pronouns which are marked with respect to the binding theory of Chomskyan generative grammar. Through a large corpus of attested examples found in contemporary nonlinguistic prose, English reflexive pronouns are shown to violate Chomsky's Binding Principle A in a productive way. The proposed grammar of these violations draws a clear-cut line between syntax and discourse, and …
