Inventors of Notation Systems in Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Istanbul: The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner
This paper aims to take yet another look at the problem of notation within the Ottoman/Turkishmusical tradition, but from a rather unusual perspective. I will deal with neither the causesnor consequences of the absence of the widespread use of notation since this is an issue Ihave dealt with elsewhere, nor will I glorify the handful of inventors of notation systemsand any of their shortcomings. There is already an overabundant amount of literatur…

Demographic Developments and “Complementarities”: Ageing, Labor and Migration
Studying demographic data, this contribution highlights the fallacies surrounding the complementarity issue: The idea of a demographic “complementarity” between a “young” Turkey and an “older” Europe is the product either of wishful thinking or of an irrational fear of a massive and uncontrollable immigration and of its effects on labor market and unemployment. Young immigrants required to prevent ageing would have to make up an unrealistically l…
Neighborhood Nuptials: Islamic Personal Law and Local Customs—marriage Records in a Mahalle of Traditional Istanbul (1864–1907)
Historians of the Ottoman legal system agree that the basic precepts of Islamic law (the sharia) were, as a matter of principle, to apply fully to the Muslim inhabitants of the empire on all matters civil, personal, and marital. Customary law (örf or adet) was, in personal and civil matters, always subordinate to it. Public law imposed by the Ottoman political authority (kanun and örf-i sultani) was promulgated on the authority of the state and r…

Istanbul Households: Marriage, Family, and Fertility, 1880-1940
The authors combine the methods and approaches of social anthropology historical demography and social history to examine changes in marriage the family and fertility in Turkey in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Polygyny in Istanbul, 1885–1926
Middle Eastern surveys n the 1970s were incompatible with the data reflected in this presentation of trends in polygyny in Istanbul between 1885-1926 from census forms. The trends for Istanbul indicate that 2.29% of all married men were married polygynously (2.51% in 1885 and 2.16% in 1906). These rates appear low when compared to 3.4% in Egypt in 1947 or 7.5% in Iraq in 1957. Islamic law permits up to 4 wives but in Istanbul the usual practice i…

Malthus and the Development of Demographic Analysis
Many techniques of demographic analysis were invented and developed during the eighteenth century. Malthus seems to have been well acquainted with the work of the best contemporary English ‘demographers’: Richard Price and Joshua Milne. To what extent was Malthus himself a ‘pure demographer’? The objective of this article is to determine Malthus's place in the history of demographic analysis and concepts and to evaluate his personal contribution …
