  • Language varieties and labor mobilities

    Open Access•Ariane Macalinga Borlongan, Ron Bridget T Vilog•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2024

While language is clearly an important aspect of (labor) migration, there have not been many contemplations and interrogations, although truly compelling and necessary, on language varieties and their place and position in labor migration and transnational work in the contemporary world, and hence why we intend to do so in this article. In our paradigmatic analysis of language varieties in the context of labor mobilities, we shall take the case o…

  • Migration linguistics

    Open Access•Ariane Macalinga Borlongan•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2023

Migration, among the most important sociocultural phenomena of contemporary global societies, is complex, dynamic, and multifaceted. At the heart of migration is language, the indispensable agent of migration. Hence, in this article, a new sub-discipline of linguistics is presented, and that is ‘migration linguistics’. It is the interdisciplinary and multidimensional study of the various aspects of language within the dynamic process of human mob…

  • Migrants in the Midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Ariane Macalinga Borlongan•ARTICLE•MIGRATION LETTERS•2022

In this article, I discuss the various issues confronting migrants in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, the language issues which they encounter. And then, I point out lessons to be learned from these issues and draw implications and suggest recommendations relating to language in the context of migration, ultimately outlining a ‘crisis and emergency language competence and plan for migrants’. I argue that there is a grea…

  • A new American-lineage English

    Ariane Macalinga Borlongan•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2021

This article inquires into the proportions of putative American variants in diachronic data of Japanese English and, subsequently, comments on the direction this specific East Asian, Expanding Circle English is taking, particularly in relation to change broadly and Americanization specifically. As a whole, Japanese English has a very obvious preference for American variants. Although the proportions of American variants in Japanese English have d…

  • Migrants in Japan and the English language

Mikhail Alic C Go, Kevin Brandon Saure et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2021

In this article, we discuss the place of English among migrants in Japan. First, we talk about the migration situation in Japan and the languages migrants use in Japan. Then, we present an overview of the status of English in Japan. We then point out how useful English can be to migrants in Japan as well as identify situations where the language is not particularly useful to them. We end the article by providing recommendations regarding the util…

  • Relocating Philippine English in Schneider’s dynamic model

    Ariane Macalinga Borlongan•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2016

It has been claimed that Philippine English is in phase 3 of Schneider’s dynamic model, probably approaching phase 4. This paper argues that Philippine English has already met the parameters set for phase 4 and that this phase may be dawning in the development of Philippine English. Event X already took place in the development of Philippine English, the ratification and implementation of two inequitable Acts that were supposedly to be an aid in …

  • Taking a look at expanded predicates in Philippine English across time

    Ariane Macalinga Borlongan, Shirley N Dita•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2015

This paper reports on a corpus-based investigation of expanded predicates in Philippine English across a three-decade period. Looking at the Philippine parallel to the Brown University Standard Corpus of Present-Day American English, it was found that there is not much change on Philippine English expanded predicates with reference to time. Philippine English demonstrated an insignificant increase in its use of expanded predicates. The new Englis…
