orders. Aristotle considered the problem further, without arriving at a completely satisfactory solution, and his well-trained successor, Demetrius, after ten years of practical experience in governing Athens, took the consciousness of it with him to Egypt. Were not constraints necessary on the guardians also ? It is reported that Demetrius had a hand in setting up a royal code for Ptolemy the son of Lagus. No one will suppose that the laws of Eg…

    Open Access•William H P Hatch, C Bradford Welles•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1958

The fragment which is described and published in the present article was bought in Cairo in February, 1931, for Yale University. It is known as P. Yale Inv. 415, and in the late Professor Gregory's list of New Testament manuscripts it is designated P 49 . It seems safe to assume that the fragment was copied somewhere in Egypt, but it cannot be assigned to any particular locality. Furthermore, nothing is known as to the place where it was found

  • The Crown of Acanthus (?)

    Open Access•Erwin R Goodenough, C Bradford Welles•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1953

The study on the “crown of thorns” by H. St.J. Hart has presented a large body of interesting material, with elaborate documentation from previous studies, to show that the crown was made from the long spikes that grow on the base of the rachis , or axis, of the date palm frond. He has illustrated many such crowns from pagan coins, and pointed out that the long spikes were used to represent the radiations which were common for the crown of, prima…

    Open Access•C Bradford Welles•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1948•Cited by: 2•References: 6

It is unnecessary to insist on the differences between the communism of Plato's political writings and the modern political systems and theories of the same name. Politically, economically, and geographically the world of Marx and his followers is different from that of Greece in the fourth century b.c., and even modern Utopias are founded on modern technology

The papyrus which bears the Yale inventory number 1528 (pl. i) was purchased from an Egyptian dealer in Paris in the summer of 1933. Nothing is known of its place of origin. It is a rectangular sheet of good quality and colour, frayed but not seriously damaged. The writing is confined to the recto . The presence of a heading, and the long vacant space below the three lines of the second column shown that the document is complete. Paragraphing is …

  • The Epitaph of Julius Terentius

    Open Access•C Bradford Welles•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1941

Investigation of the Agora area at Dura was begun in 1931, and continued in the following seasons of work. It is now possible to trace in some detail the history of the site, which developed from an open square only partly enclosed by simple market buildings into a complex of public and private structures. From one of the latter, a private house built in the late second century in the northwest part of the area (G 5 H), came the inscription which…
