  • The Povest' vremennykh let

David K Prestel, Donald Ostrowski et al.•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2005

Tale of Bygone Years (Povest Vremennykh let) is an important source for the history of early Rus'. This volume provides the text, including all of the known redactions of the Povest. It consists of an intercollation of the five oldest redactions, three modern redactions, three later interpolations and Donald Ostrowski's own final interpretation. The intercollated texts are nested line by line

  • The Slavonic Book of Esther

Robert Mathiesen, Horace G Lunt et al.•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2000

The Old Testament Book of Esther in Slavonic translation is known from East Slavic manuscripts of the late-14th to the late-16th centuries. Working from the Masoretic Hebrew texts and Greek translations, this work examines textological clues to the circumstances of the sources, redactions and translation of Esther. The study creates a basis from which scholars can discuss the particulars of this translation, the nature of Wast Slavic biblical tra…

Fifty years ago, Charles C. Torrey, writing about Esther, asked on the pages of this journal, “Why is there no Greek translation of the Hebrew text? Every other book of the Hebrew Bible, whatever its nature, has its faithful rendering (at least one, often several) in Greek. For the canonical Esther, on the contrary, no such version is extant, nor is there evidence that one ever existed.” It is common knowledge that the extant Greek versions of Es…

  • Notes on Nationalist Attitudes in Slavic Studies

    Horace G Lunt•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•1992

To be effective teachers (in the classroom and in writing for our peers), we must be fully conversant with our subject matter what it is we want to teach and aware of our audience what they already know and might be interested in learning. This is easy enough with an elementary language course where the facts are set forth in authoritative handbooks, and certain items obviously must be mastered first, while others must be postponed. Even there, h…

  • History, Nationalism, and the Written Language of Early Rus

    Horace G Lunt•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•1990

Books, as a rule, reflect in important ways the common assumptions of the milieu in which they were written. Soviet books are inevitably influenced by the atmosphere of the last few decades. In 1990 it is no longer possible to pretend to evaluate Soviet scholarly works unless we include some attention not only to the known ideological requirements but in particular to the tacit presuppositions that underlie the overt premises and theses utilized …

could probably establish if OCS had not been invented and we had to rely on rather later linguistic data. Still , the manuscripts furnish conflicting testimony about many details , and the evaluation of the data requires that we know or assume something about the time and place each manuscript was written. It is vital to emphasize that from the outset we are in the realm of speculation; what is important is that our speculative explorations be cl…

  • Old Church Slavonic bedrъno

    Horace G Lunt•ARTICLE•Language•1953

[OCS *bedrъnъ ‘rich’ is attested only once, in the form bedъno. It has no relation to bъdrъ ‘vigilant’ and bъděti ‘be awake’. It is cognate with Sanskrit bhadraḥ ‘good fortune, auspicious’, and establishes an IE *bhed-r - rather than the bh̿d - posited by earlier investigators. From the same base are formed Slavic names for the herb burnet saxifrage and the ladybug, both of which are associated in Slavic belief with good luck and prosperity.]

The lucid account of the Moravian mission of Constantine-Cyril and Methodius that Professor Dvornik has given is a persuasive and up-to-date statement of widely accepted views. Yet scarcely a single specialist would be willing to agree unhesitatingly with all the details even in such a brief résumé of the quarter-century of relations between the emerging Slavic nations and their neighbors. Indeed, some, as his footnotes suggest, might take except…
