Scrambling: Nontriggered Chain Formation in OV Languages
In this paper we argue for the following properties of clause-bound scrambling, as they are manifested in German. First, scrambling presupposes head-final projections. Only selected constituents, notably arguments, scramble, the reason being that phrases selected by a head have a unique base order. Second, scrambling involves antecedent-gap dependencies with A-chain properties. Third, scrambling is overt and non-string-vacuous. Fourth, scrambling…
Epp: A Syntactic Device in the Service of Semantics
It will be argued that the EPP is not feature driven, nor does it result in feature erasure. Neither is it directly related to subjecthood, there being no association between the expletive and the subject. Instead it is a syntactic device in the service of semantics. Syntactically, it is a parametrized visibility requirement on two functional specifiers, SpecFin and SpecT. The EPP is prototypically satisfied by one of the following two options: m…
Rethinking the adjunct
The purpose of the present paper is twofold: first, to show that, when defining the adjunct, it is necessary to distinguish in a strict modular way between the syntactic level and the lexico-semantic level. Thus, the adjunct is a syntactic category on a par with the specifier and the complement, whereas the argument belongs to the same set as does (among others) the modifier. The consequence of this distinction is that there is no direct one-to-o…
The thetic/categorical distinction revisited once more
This paper discusses the distinction thetic/categorical from the viewpoint of a modular framework where the main components are, on the one hand, grammar (a formal component) and information structure (a functional component), both belonging to the language system, and, on the other, an extralinguistic component, conceptual structure. The interaction between grammar and information structure results in specific clause structures giving rise to a …
