  • Finding karstic caves and rockshelters in the Inner Asian mountain corridor using predictive modelling and field survey

Patrick Cuthbertson, Tobias Ullman et al.•PREPRINT•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 19

The area of the Inner Asian Mountain Corridor (IAMC) follows the foothills and piedmont zones around the northern limits of Asia’s interior mountains, connecting two important areas for human evolution: the Fergana valley and the Siberian Altai. Prior research has suggested the IAMC may have provided an area of connected refugia from harsh climates during the Pleistocene. To date, this region contains very few secure, dateable Pleistocene sites, …

  • In search of a Paleolithic Silk Road in Kazakhstan

Radu Iovita, Aristeidis Varis et al.•PREPRINT•2020•Referencias: 33

Paleoanthropological data suggest that the Late Pleistocene was a time of population contact and possibly dispersal in Central Asia. Geographic and paleoclimatic data suggest that a natural corridor through Kazakhstan linked areas to the north and east (Siberia, China) to those further to the west and south (Uzbekistan), much akin to a Paleolithic Silk Road. We review the known Pleistocene archaeology and paleoclimatic setting of this region and …

  • Preliminary results of the first lithic raw material survey in the piedmont zones of Kazakhstan

Abay Namen, Patrick Cuthbertson et al.•PREPRINT•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 18

The study of raw materials focuses on different aspects of hominin behaviour such as mobility strategies, land-use patterns and raw material transfer. They were comprehensively studied in the Palaeolithic of Europe and Africa. However, systematic studies of raw material sourcing have not been undertaken for the Palaeolithic of Kazakhstan, such surveys being embedded in reconnaissance works aimed at discovering new Palaeolithic sites. Our study pr…

  • Ushbulak—A New Stratified Upper Paleolithic Site in Northeastern Kazakhstan

    Open Access•A А Anoikin, G Pavlenok et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 6

We present the findings of excavations at the stratified site of Ushbulak, discovered during a joint Russian-Kazakhstan research project in 20I6. The site is located in the Shilikty Valley, northeastern Kazakhstan, at the junction of routes connecting southwestern Central Asia, southern Siberia, and northern China. On the basis of stratigraphy, chronology, and technological evidence, we identify three technological complexes, relating to the Meta…

  • Shulbinka Paleolithic Site, Eastern Kazakhstan, Revisited

    Open Access•A А Anoikin, E Panteleeva et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

This study revises the cultural and chronological attribution of the Shulbinka site, Eastern Kazakhstan, with reference to recent ideas of the Early Upper Paleolithic in northern Central Asia, including new sites dating to that stage (Tolbor-21, Ushbulak, etc.) and a representative series of absolute dates relevant to the site's chronology. We describe the discovery of the site and principal findings of excavations carried out more than 20 years …
