Is Narcissism Linked to Stress Reactivity Under Social-Evaluative Threat
Previous research reported that different subtypes of narcissism lead to stronger or weaker stress responses, due to narcissistic individual’s sensitivity to social evaluation. However, evidence remains mixed. In the current preregistered study, we investigated psychological and physiological stress response indicators (self-reports, salivary cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate) of N = 161 male participants exposed to the Trier Social…
Oxytocin does not impact forced-choice recognition memory in an experimental trauma film paradigm with healthy women
Although the exogenous oxytocin administration before a trauma film has been shown to influence the acquisition of intrusive memories, it does not seem to affect the recognition memory of trauma film details. That aligns with cognitive models of PTSD, suggesting that voluntary and involuntary memory after trauma can be independently addressed through experimental interventions
Yohimbine-Induced Reactivity of Heart Rate Variability in Unmedicated Depressed Patients With and Without Adverse Childhood Experience
Stressful life events play a role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD) and many patients with MDD were exposed to developmental stress due to adverse childhood experiences (ACE). Furthermore, dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and higher incidence of cardiovascular disease are found in MDD. In MDD, and independently in individuals with ACE, abnormalities in heart rate variability (HRV) have been reported. While these …
Inflammatory Measures in Depressed Patients With and Without a History of Adverse Childhood Experiences
Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex psychiatric condition with different subtypes and etiologies. Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACE) is an important risk factor for the development of MDD later in life. Evidence suggests that pro-inflammatory processes may convey this risk as both MDD and ACE have been related to increased levels of inflammation. In the present study, we aimed to disentangle the effects of MDD an…

Childhood Trauma in Multiple Sclerosis
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between childhood trauma and multiple sclerosis (MS) by comparing histories of child abuse and neglect between patients with MS and adults from the general population in a cross-sectional case-control study. Previous research has demonstrated a connection between MS and a variety of emotional stressors, but childhood trauma, which is known to have long-lasting negative consequences for physical health dec…
Depression and Whole Blood Serotonin in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease From the Heart and Soul Study
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether depression is associated with whole blood serotonin in outpatients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD). Depression is associated with incident CHD and with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Dysregulation of peripheral serotonin, common to both depression and CHD, may contribute to this association. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 791 participants with stable CHD enrolled in the Heart and Soul St…
Predictors of Posttraumatic Stress in Police and Other First Responders
We provide an overview of previous research conducted by our group on risk and resilience factors for PTSD symptoms in police and other first responders. Based on our work, the findings of other investigators on individual differences in risk for PTSD, and drawing on preclinical studies fear conditioning and extinction, we propose a conceptual model for the development of PTSD symptoms emphasizing the role of vulnerability and resilience to perit…
