The intertwining of health and education
This paper outlines the personal transformation that occurred when three university educators from very different fields (education, midwifery, and oral health) and world views, established a common understanding of their research topic and subsequent development of a research question to improve health educators’ capability when teaching interprofessional practice. Most health educators entering higher education are specialists in their clinical…
Establishing a Guide for Developing Organizational Support in Healthcare Following a Critical or Sentinel Event
Health professionals require support and recognition to help manage the well-known impact of critical or sentinel events relating to patient care. The potential distress can be magnified or mitigated by the response of the organization and colleagues. However, strategies that are accessible, relevant, and effective in the aftermath of a poor outcome are not well established. Using an action research methodology, a support tool was collaboratively…
When Maintaining Relationships and Social Connectivity Matter
New Zealand's response to COVID-19 was go hard and go early into Level 4 lockdown on 25 th March 2020. This rapid response has resulted in low rates of infection and deaths. For New Zealand midwives, the sudden changes to how they work with women and families during pregnancy, birth and postnatally, especially in the community, required unprecedented innovation and adaptation. The volume of information coming from many different sources, and the …
Commodification and Resistance
Drawing on interview, survey, and long-term participant observational research in the BMW motorcycling community, we analyze issues related to the commodification of riding. We use Hill-Collins's (1999) "both/and" approach in our data analysis. Specifically, we draw on Adorno's (1991) and Marcuse's (1964) theories of the commodification of popular culture and the power of the "culture industry" to market non-essential products. We find that Marx'…
Edgework, Fun, and Identification in a Recreational Subculture
The sociological study of risk-taking behavior is a relatively recent development. Lyng (1990) and others have developed the field of edgework, or the “sociology of risk-taking.” In this study, we examine a group of edgeworkers to understand the role of fun and identity in a group of BMX “freestyle” bicycle riders and conclude that these riders reject rational reasons, in the sense of the term envisioned by Weber, for riding in favor of choosing …
Enduring Pictures in Our Heads
This study highlights the importance of examining the influence of personality measures, specifically authoritarianism, on negative racial stereotyping, even in an era of alleged color blindness. The authors examine the relationship of various demographic variables and authoritarianism with negative racial stereotyping in a sample of White urban respondents. Current literature suggests that age, sex, marital status, religious identification, reli…
Pro-Environmental Behavior in an Urban Social Structural Context
Research into environmental concern and behavior has been extensive in the past few decades. The connection between the two, as well as other related variables, has however remained somewhat elusive. This study attempts to refine our understanding of how concern for the environment is related to pro-environmental behavior such as buying ecologically friendly products, driving less, conserving resources at home, recycling, etc., by considering the…

Ritual and Boundary Distinction in a Recreational Community
Attending motorcycle rallies is an important component of social life for many touring motorcyclists. The significance of these events transcends the mere recreational experience of riding a motorcycle and spending time with other riders. This project is an examination of brand specific motorcycle rallies as a process and social world that has ritualistic features and activities that serve to bond members of the group, reinforce their identity, a…
The Effects of Neighborhood Satisfaction on Perception of Safety Among Refugees From the Former Soviet Union
Neighborhood and urban conditions have long been shown to have a strong impact on residents’ feelings of safety and fear or crime. Researchers, however, have not tested the relationship between neighborhood conditions and perception of safety among refugees groups. Comparisons between a general sample of Louisville residents and refugees from the former Soviet Union indicated that refugees were less satisfied with their neighborhoods than the gen…

An exploratory factor model of social area analysis
Social ecology theory promotes the idea that the social structure of any given area influences the behavior of the social group in that area. One model of ecological theory is Shevky and Bell's social area analysis, which presents three constructs to describe and measure urban differences. Shevky and Bell label these constructs social rank, urbanization, and segregation. However, the measures (and labels) originally proposed by Shevky and Bell ha…
Economic and environmental concerns as influences on growth attitudes
Two sets of items from Albrecht et al. (1986) are used to examine small town residents’ attitudes about the environment and the economy. One scale measures a general growth ethic while the other measures attitudes concerning urban growth. Concern over the environment and the economy are assessed with items drawn from Blocker and Eckberg (1989). Results indicate that environmental concerns are a stronger influence on growth attitudes than are econ…
Community Context and Complexity of Organizational Structure in Neighborhood Associations
Using data from neighborhood associations in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, this research examines the relationship between the structure of neighborhood associations and the characteristics of the population of their respective neighborhoods assuming that the social environment in which an association operates has an impact on the structure of the organization. The size of the association, the percentage of the neighborhood population that is Black so…

Investigation of a Curvilinear Relationship
This research examines the relationship between perceptions of neighborhood safety or crime and personal interaction occurring in the neighborhood context. Past research has assessed the linear relationship between sentiment concerning local crime and neighborhood interaction and has shown inconsistent findings. We have analyzed the relationship between the two variables and discovered a curvilinear relationship. At the lowest level of feelings o…
Social determinants of neighborhood attachment
The research assesses the relative contribution of social participation and satisfaction with the neighborhood to attachment to the local community or neighborhood. It analyzes the importance of two different sources of community affect on residents’ attachment to their neighborhood. Previous research has focused on subjective social indicators as measures of neighborhood quality, and the establishment of social bonds and interaction as the basis…
The question of community attachment revisited
In this paper we compare the relative effects of satisfaction with specific community (neighborhood) attributes and social integration into the community on community attachment. Previous research on community attachment has not assessed the importance of satisfaction with specific attributes as a determinant of attachment. Instead, this research has focussed on integration into the social life of a community as the primary source of community at…
