Healthy lifestyle moderates the association between recent negative life events and depressive symptoms
Background: Both recent negative life events (RNLEs) and lifestyle factors were associated with depressive symptoms, but it is unclear whether adopting a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the association between RNLEs and depressive symptoms. We aim to explore the modifying role of adopting a healthy lifestyle in the association between RNLEs and depressive symptoms. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4,278 participants aged 18-70 y…
Longitudinal association between somatic symptoms and suicidal ideation in adults with major depressive disorder
Our findings suggest that in patients with MDD, there is a significant association between somatic symptoms and their subtypes with SI. Notably, the risk of SI is significantly increased by somatic symptoms in a nonlinear manner. These findings highlight the necessity of addressing somatic symptoms in the management of depression and emphasize the importance of developing targeted interventions to mitigate suicide risk in this vulnerable populati…
Predictive potential of somatic symptoms for the identification of subthreshold depression and major depressive disorder in primary care settings
Somatic symptoms were associated with the presence of SD and MDD. In addition, somatic symptoms, notably those related to energy, showed good predictive potential in identifying SD and MDD in primary care. The clinical implication of the present study is that GPs should consider the closely related somatic symptoms for early recognition for depression in practice
Problematic Internet Use, Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs, and Depressive Symptoms among Adolescents
This large-scale study aimed to test, among Chinese adolescents, the association between problematic Internet use (PIU), non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD), and depressive symptoms, as well as the mediating effects of NMUPD on the associations above. This study used the data from the 2017 National School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey, and 24,345 students' questionnaires qualified for the analyses. Generalized linear mixed mod…
Neural Activation During Tonic Pain and Interaction Between Pain and Emotion in Bipolar Disorder
Objective: Pain and affective disorders have clear clinical relevance; however, very few studies have investigated the association between pain and bipolar disorder. This study investigated the brain activity of patients with bipolar disorder (BPs) undergoing tonic pain and assessed the interaction between pain and emotion. Methods: Ten BPs and ten healthy controls (HCs) were exposed to emotional pictures (positive, neutral, or negative), tonic p…
