  • What linguists think everyone should know about language – on extracting salience from open-ended responses

    Open Access•Tomas Lehecka, Jon-Ola Östman•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2026

The study reports on a global survey asking linguists what they think everyone should know about language. Specifically, we asked linguists to formulate questions that it would be important for the general public to know the answer to. We received 3,349 suggestions for such questions from 538 linguists from 49 different countries. The study undertakes a content analysis of these open-ended responses. We analyze the text data at three levels of ab…

  • Towards establishing what linguists think the general public should know about language

    Open Access•Tomas Lehecka, Jon-Ola Östman•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2023

In order to develop effective strategies of science communication and public outreach in linguistics, one needs to choose what topics to prioritise in such efforts. We carried out a global online survey study among experts in linguistics ( n = 538) asking what they perceive as the most important facts about language that the general public should be aware of. We used two distinct methods to collect the respondents' opinions: open‐ended text respo…

  • Embedding in Shawi narrations

    Open Access•Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia, Tomas Lehecka et al.•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 18

In this article, we provide the first quantitative account of the frequent use of embedding in Shawi, a Kawapanan language spoken in Peruvian Northwestern Amazonia. We collected a corpus of ninety-two Frog Stories (Mayer 1969) from three different field sites in 2015 and 2016. Using the glossed corpus as our data, we conducted a generalised mixed model analysis, where we predicted the use of embedding with several macrosocial variables, such as g…

  • Normative ratings for 111 Swedish nouns and corresponding picture stimuli

    Open Access•Tomas Lehecka•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2021

Normative ratings are a means to control for the effects of confounding variables in psycholinguistic experiments. This paper introduces a new dataset of normative ratings for Swedish encompassing 111 concrete nouns and the corresponding picture stimuli in the MultiPic database (Duñabeitia et al. 2017). The norms for name agreement, category typicality, age of acquisition and subjective frequency were collected using online surveys among native s…
