  • Female foragers sometimes hunt, yet gendered divisions of labor are real

Open Access•Vivek V Venkataraman, Jordie Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2024

  • Economic impacts and nutritional outcomes of the 2017 floods in B angladeshi S hodagor fishing families

Open Access•Kathrine E Starkweather, Katie Starkweather et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2023

OBJECTIVES: As climate change continues to increase the frequency and severity of flooding in Bangladesh and globally, it becomes increasingly critical to understand the pathways through which flooding influences health outcomes, particularly in lower-income and subsistence-based communities. We aim to assess economic pathways that link flooding to nutritional outcomes among Shodagor fishing families in Bangladesh. METHODS: We examine longitudina…

  • The Role of Spousal Separation on Norms Related to Gender and Sexuality among Himba Pastoralists

    Open Access•B A Scelza, Sean P Prall et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 50

The gender-specific labor demands of arid pastoralism often lead to spousal separation. Men typically respond in one of two ways: engage in mate guarding tactics, or loosen restrictions on female sexuality. Among Himba pastoralists in northwest Namibia, the latter strategy is dominant. Rooted in a history of matriliny, Himba have strong norms promoting female sexual autonomy. We propose that these conditions, combined with a stochastic resource b…

  • Patterns of paternal investment predict cross-cultural variation in jealous response

    Open Access•B A Scelza, Sean P Prall et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 27

  • Estimating impacts of the nuclear family and heritability of nutritional outcomes in a boat‐dwelling community

Open Access•Kathrine E Starkweather, Katie Starkweather et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2018

OBJECTIVES: General health status is reflected in measures of height, weight, and BMI. Assessing sources of variation in these outcomes reveals population-specific variables of importance to health and nutrition. We characterize the impacts of socioeconomic variables related to the nuclear family on health outcomes of boat-dwelling Shodagor children, mothers, and fathers, and to estimate the proportion of variation in height, weight, and BMI infl…

  • Parenting Strategies in Modern and Emerging Economies

  • Shodagor Family Strategies

    Open Access•Kathrine E Starkweather, Katie Starkweather•ARTICLE•Human Nature•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 41

The Shodagor of Matlab, Bangladesh, are a seminomadic community of people who live and work on small wooden boats, within the extensive system of rivers and canals that traverse the country. This unique ecology places particular constraints on family and economic life and leads to Shodagor parents employing one of four distinct strategies to balance childcare and provisioning needs. The purpose of this paper is to understand the conditions that l…
