  • The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Guideline on Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Management for Low- and Middle-Income Countries

    Open Access•Joao Mauricio Castaldelli-Maia, Roger M K Ng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2026

There is a pressing need to address the unique challenges of managing Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), where mental health resources are scarce and unevenly distributed. To develop this evidence-based guideline, we conducted a systematic review of the literature, followed by three rounds of Delphi surveys with experts from LMICs. The first two Delphi rounds identified and refined priority topics,…

Open Access•David M Ndetei, David Ndetei et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2026

Suicide is a significant global public health concern, particularly among adolescents, with substantial implications for economies, societies and individuals' mental well-being. Understanding its patterns and intention and psychosocial determinants in a given context can suggest potential intervention points. This population-based cross-sectional study aimed to document suicidal ideas, behaviors and intensity among youths aged 14 to 25 in the Nai…

  • Investigating the effectiveness of three school based interventions for preventing psychotic experiences over a year period – a secondary data analysis study of a randomized control trial

Open Access•Lorna Staines, Colm Healy et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This study provides the first evidence for a school based intervention that reduce & prevent PEs in adolescence. This intervention is a combination of a school-based screening for psychopathology and subsequent referral intervention significantly reduced PEs in adolescents. Although further research is needed, our findings point to the effectiveness of school-based programmes for prevention of future mental health problems

  • Decision-Making in Suicidal Behavior

Open Access•Gergö Hadlaczky, Sebastian Hökby et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

This and previous studies suggest that altered decision-making is involved in suicide attempts. In our study, we show the involvement of loss aversion in particular, and propose that individuals high in loss aversion are discouraged from carrying out the suicide attempt because of a greater focus on the negative consequences of the decision

  • Direct Self-Injurious Behavior (D-SIB) and Life Events among Vocational School and High School Students

Open Access•Lili Olga Horváth, Maria Balint et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Although several studies have recently assessed direct self-injurious behavior (D-SIB) among adolescents, it is still understudied in adolescents attending vocational schools: an educational setting generally associated with lower socioeconomic status. After extending the "Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe" (SEYLE) project to a vocational school population, we examined their D-SIB and life event characteristics compared to the high scho…

Research with minors, especially for preventive purposes, e.g., suicide prevention, investigating risk or self-destructive behaviors such as deviance, drug abuse, or suicidal behavior, is ethically sensitive. We present a Delphi study exploring the ethical implications of the needs formulated by researchers in an international pre-conference who would benefit from ethics support and guidance in conducting Mental Health Research with minors. Open Access•Tony Durkee, Vladimir Carli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Risk-behaviors are a major contributor to the leading causes of morbidity among adolescents and young people; however, their association with pathological Internet use (PIU) is relatively unexplored, particularly within the European context. The main objective of this study is to investigate the association between risk-behaviors and PIU in European adolescents. This cross-sectional study was conducted within the framework of the FP7 European Uni…

    Open Access•Mami Kasahara-Kiritani, Gergö Hadlaczky et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Reading books and watching films were investigated as protective factors for serious suicidal ideation (SSI) in young people with low perceived social belonging. Cross-sectional and longitudinal (12-month) analyses were performed using data from a representative European sample of 3256 students from the "Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe" study. Low social belonging was associated to SSI. However, reading books and watching films modera…

  • Important Variables When Screening for Students at Suicidal Risk

    Open Access•Jean‐Pierre Kahn, Jean-Pierre Kahn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Due to early detection of mental ill-health being an important suicide preventive strategy, the multi-centre EU funded "Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe" (SEYLE) study compared three school-based mental health promotion programs to a control group. In France, 1007 students with a mean age of 15.2 years were recruited from 20 randomly assigned schools. This paper explores the French results of the SEYLE's two-stage screening program (Pr…

    Ellenor Mittendorfer‐rutz, E Mittendorfer-Rutz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 23

BACKGROUND: Inverse associations of birth length with suicide attempts have recently been reported. Whether growth during childhood alters this association is not known. The influences on patterns of growth in fetal life and childhood might be different for violent and non-violent suicide attempts. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of fetal and childhood growth and possible effect modification on suicide attempts, both violent and non-violent,…

  • Gender and Age-Specific Dynamics of Suicides in the Baltic States During the Transition Period

Open Access•Liina-Mai Tooding, Airi Värnik et al.•ARTICLE•Trames Journal of the Humanities…•2004

A strong age-specific differentiation in the dynamics of suicide risk in all age groups observed during the transition period in the three Baltic states has been established. Considering that the dynamics of suicide risk had regular cyclic character, it could be suggested that the factor of cyclical character is external. The pooled rates of the three Baltic countries show rising trends of suicide rates among the youngest and 45-75 year old men, …
