  • Effects of tempo and stress on German syllable structure

    Open Access•Christiane Laeufer•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 6

A comprehensive view of German syllable structure is developed based on phonetic and psycholinguistic experimental results supplemented by phonological arguments. The account is based on the interaction between universal factors (sonority/strength constraints, effects of tempo) and language-specific factors (phonotactic constraints, effects of stress). Initial, phonological syllabification reveals the distributional constraints operating in the l…

  • Theoretical Analyses in Romance Linguistics: Selected papers from the Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages XIX, Ohio State University, April 21–23, 1989

Christiane Laeufer, Terrell A Morgan•BOOK•Theoretical Analysis in Romance…•1991

This nineteenth edition of LSRL proceedings contains a selection of papers on variety of Romance idioms and includes current topics in established areas of study. The phonology papers focus mostly on syllabic and higher-level prosodic structure. The morphology section deals primarily with compounding. The syntax contributions principally treat infinitival clauses, extraction phenomena, and binding. While synchronic data serve as the point of depa…

  • An Introduction to the Comparative Phonetics of English and French in North America

    Christiane Laeufer, Marc Picard•ARTICLE•Language•1991

This textbook is designed to fill two basic needs. One is for a clear and straightforward presentation of the rudiments of articulatory phonetics which is geared specifically to the requirements of the (future) language teacher, and not exclusively to the student of linguistics, and in which the basic concepts and terminology are introduced via English as opposed to a variety of languages. An even greater need, perhaps, and one that has gone unfu…
