  • The EMU Effect on Trade

    Open Access•Carmen Díaz Mora, Carmen Díaz‐Mora et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2026

This paper estimates the EMU effect on trade accounting for heterogeneous effects across space and time. We use an extended two‐way fixed‐effect estimator for staggered difference‐in‐differences within the structural gravity model. The average EMU impact on trade between members accounting for the heterogeneity of the treatment effect at the cohort‐year level is positive (about 15%) but similar to that found using the standard two‐way fixed‐effec…

  • Coping with high decline

    Open Access•Silviano Esteve-Pérez, Fabio Pieri et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2024

This work investigates the factors that precipitate a firm’s sudden high decline, which is defined as a short-term heavy contraction in firm size, and examines firms’ performance in the aftermath of a high-decline (HD) event. The empirical analysis reveals patterns of HD events over the business cycle and across markets, providing insights into the factors that enable firms’ resilience in terms of better growth performance after an HD event. Firm…

  • The impact of climate change on international trade

    Open Access•Alejandra Martínez‐Martínez, Silviano Esteve-Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

The aim of this article is to analyse the impact of climate change on bilateral trade flows. To this end, we estimate a theory‐grounded gravity model using bilateral trade flows on a sample of 67 countries over the period from 1986 to 2016. We use temperatures and extreme weather events (and their consequences) as indicators of climate change. In general, we find that international trade flows are less affected by the evolution of temperatures th…

  • Previous experience, experimentation and export survival

    Open Access•Silviano Esteve-Pérez•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

This paper explores the role of a firm's product and/or market export experience and experimentation for survival of new product‐destination export spells, using firm‐level Spanish customs data over the period 1997–2015. Previous research has documented a positive impact of experience on export survival. This paper contributes to the extant literature by unravelling the distinct effect on export survival of ongoing accumulated experience (i.e., f…

  • EMU and trade

    Open Access•Silviano Esteve-Pérez, Silviano Esteve‐Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2020

This paper examines the EMU effect on trade for the eleven early joiners and Greece relying for the first time on data that include both international and intra‐national trade flows, in line with all the microfoundations of the structural gravity model of trade. We find that the overall EMU impact on trade is positive between its members and, specially, for trade between members and non‐members. Interestingly, we further show that the effect of t…
