  • Scaling and indexing sexual anxiety in the Brazilian contemporary extreme right

Open Access•Luiz Paulo Moita-Lopes, Branca Falabella Fabrício•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2025

In this article, we discuss the contemporary phenomenon of the extreme right and argue that it involves the friction between the chronotopes of Colonial Modernity and those of the libertarian forces from the 1960s and 1970s. We also emphasize that this phenomenon can also be understood as social fascism. This chronotopic confrontation, which centrally includes social networks and voracious capitalism, is the effect of biopower and the tactical pr…

  • Plotting hope: Inverse stories and scalar reversals of a health crisis

    Open Access•Branca Falabella Fabrício, R Borba•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2024

This article investigates the discursive dimensions of the Zika epidemic in Brazil. It focuses on the ways the sanitary crisis is talked about by mothers of babies born with microcephaly-a Zika-related syndrome. We examine the situated ways these mothers refuse the biomedical and bureaucratic scripts that are handed down to them by engaging with their new realities and fostering hope against the grain of bleak prognosis. To do so, we scrutinize a…

  • Language, gender and sexuality in 2021

    Open Access•Branca Falabella Fabrício•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 37

This year-in-review addresses the way violence and civil unrest manifested intensely in 2021, at the two-year mark of the Covid-19 pandemic, by inspecting the local dramas various authors re-narrate through the lenses of gender, sexuality and their semiotic performances. Three focal points organise the literature recontextualised here. First is the study of the lingering effects of cisheteropatriarchy in different contexts. Second, while forging …

  • Living memories of the changing same: Rio's linguistic landscape at the crossroads of time and race

Open Access•R Borba, Branca Falabella Fabrício et al.•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2022•Cited by: 7

This article questions the time of white modernity based on historical periodization and sequential progression, arguing for a more multifaceted approach to time and space in linguistic landscapes (LL). It rethinks the concept of chronotope by examining effects of the African diaspora in Brazil. The experience of radical uprooting it promoted fuses spatiotemporal dimensions that operate in complementary directions. On the one hand, a necrotope se…

  • Us for Ourselves”: Enregistering and De-Escalating Coronavirus Under Nervous Conditions

Open Access•Branca Falabella Fabrício, Glenda Cristina Valim De Melo•ARTICLE•Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada•2020

In this paper, we explore how attention to language and communication has been one of the strategies to combat the pandemic and foster health justice in the deprived areas of the city. To investigate such aspect, we draw on the conceptions of enregisterment, de-escalation and orders of indexicality. We focus on practices of pragmatic survival enacted by Maré Mobilization Front

  • A scalar approach to the circulation of virulent affects on the web

    Branca Falabella Fabrício•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This paper develops a scalar view of affect, with a focus on the intense animosity often found in digital encounters. It argues that affect is an important dimension of sense-making and sustains this standpoint both theoretically and empirically, by resorting to a linguistic-anthropological understanding of scale and by analyzing the hectic transit of texts in viral phenomena on the Internet. As a case in point, it analyses a long-lasting interac…

  • Transidiomaticity and transperformances in Brazilian queer rap: Toward an abject aesthetics

Open Access•Branca Falabella Fabrício, Luiz Paulo Moita-Lopes et al.•ARTICLE•Gragoatá•2019

Queer rap has been shining in the homophobic world of hip-hop lately, especially in the contemporary New York music scene. Considered by many as the new kids on the block, queer rappers have been breaking down mainstream ways of composing, delivering and enacting rap tunes by working on more outwardly feminine performances characterized by ambivalence, hybridity and defiance. In this paper, we focus on how Rico Dalasam, a contemporary Brazilian r…

  • Does the picture below show a heterosexual couple or not?’

Luiz Paulo Moita-Lopes, Branca Falabella Fabrício•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2018

In this paper we investigate an intimate encounter in 'Life in the Closet', a blog fed by a Brazilian undergraduate, N.B., between 2011 and 2014. As a case in point, we focus on how a YouTube video advert called 'The Man Man' is successively entextualised in the blog, by following its re-entextualisation into posts made by the blogger himself and other participants. We explore this digital event as an instance of several chained reperformances, o…

  • Mobility and Discourse Circulation in the Contemporary World: The Turn of the Referential Screw

    Open Access•Branca Falabella Fabrício•ARTICLE•Revista da Anpoll•2016•Cited by: 1

In this paper I call into question the referential paradigm, drawing on the conceptual framework developed by contemporary Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics. I call for the urgent problematization of the so-called referential metaphysics while arguing that constructs such as entextualization and indexicality can shake the strong representational tradition in the field of language studies - a tradition…

  • TV-school hybrid literacy practices as sites for making another logic possible: Voicing Contrasts That Promote Gender and Sexuality Trans-Experiences

    Open Access•Branca Falabella Fabrício, Luiz Paulo Moita-Lopes•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguagem e Sociedade•2015•References: 6

Considering the relationship between media and sense-making in Brazil, the purpose of this article is to examine an interventionist collaborative ethnography in a specific literacy context – history classes in a Brazilian state school, in which the classroom teacher, two researchers, and 5th grade students conjointly try to decenter commonsense views of gender and sexuality. By making ample recourse to media texts and to radical hybridity, they w…
