Emerging Applications of LiDAR / Airborne Laser Scanning in the Management of World Heritage Sites
Remotely sensed data and imagery have revolutionized the way we understand archaeological sites and landscapes. LiDAR / airborne laser scanning (ALS) has been used to capture the often subtle topographic remnants of previously undiscovered sites even in intensely studied landscapes, and is rapidly becoming a key technology in survey projects with large extents and/or difficult terrain. This paper examines the practical application of this technol…
The Measurement by Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) of Disturbance Within the Nasca World Heritage Site
In this paper we report on our use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) as a means of monitoring the Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Pampas de Jumana World Heritage Site in Peru, where the colossal ground drawings, popularly known as the Nasca Lines, are found. Our research to date indicates that the environment in which the Nasca geoglyphs are found, and the nature of the geoglyphs themselves, are suited perfectly for investigation by SAR. SAR als…
Threats to the Archaeological Heritage in the Laissez-Faire World of Tourism: The Need for Global Standards as a Global Public Good
Archaeological materials are finite, non-renewable, and irreplaceable. Preserving what they might contribute to human knowledge requires that we safeguard not only archaeological materials themselves, but also the contexts in which they occur. Unfortunately, the archaeological record is threatened by the acceleration of many natural processes (e.g. sea level rise and desertification) and human activities. Among the latter is tourism, now a major …

Africa, Archaeology, and World Heritage
In this paper we discuss the initiative of the ICOMOS International Committee for Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM) to contribute to the UNESCO strategy to create a more representative and balanced World Heritage List. This can be done by concentrating on archaeological sites in Africa that potentially have Outstanding Universal Value. In so doing, we address at the same time the (thematic) under-representation of archaeological sites on…

Ritual GroundBent's Old Fort, World Formation, and the Annexation of the Southwest: Bent's Old Fort, world formation, and the annexation of the Southwest
From about 1830 to 1849, Bent's Old Fort, located in present-day Colorado on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail, was the largest trading post in the Southwest and the mountain-plains region. Although the raw enterprise and improvisation which characterized the American westward movement seem to have little to do with ritual, this book argues that the fort grew and prospered because of ritual, and that that ritual shaped the subsequent hist…
