From Industrial Pasts to Culture-Oriented Futures: Urban Planning in Postindustrial Rijeka and Zagreb
This article examines how urban planning discourse and policy documents in Rijeka and Zagreb articulate the two cities’ futures in the context of postindustrial transformation. The analysis reveals that policy makers’ strategies for the revitalisation of deindustrialised sites prioritise two central dimensions: space as a resource and the value of industrial heritage. Other dimensions of industrial identity, such as knowledge, skills, and social …

Despite their previous marginality, both places function as places of gathering but also as spaces wh…

They focus on diverse narrations and practices through which the formerly industrial communities make sense of industrialisation and deindustrialisation. Local understandings of (post)…

Rijeka 2020: Resemantization of the City Identity by Culture
Rijeka held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2020. The authors define the year-long preparation and events planned for 2020 as a framework for questioning the city's identity through culture driven regeneration. The temporal dimension, the fact that ECOC is an opportunity to think about the future of the city, is important in the process. The article includes, along with the theoretical and methodological introduction, a comprehensive …
Kombinirajući teorijske postavke antropologije krajolika i antropologije društvenog sjećanja, Jami pristupaju kao mjestu sjećanja, zahvaćajući životne priče pripadnika dviju generacija jedne pazinsk…

Grad, industrija i zdravlje: Naracije lokalnoga stanovništva o koksari u Bakru

The Titoaffect: Tracing Objects and Memories of Socialism in Postsocialist Croatia
Josip Broz Tito was the personification of the Yugoslav state for 35 years. Starting from specific scenes where objects referring to him are visible in contemporary Croatia, the authors of Chapter 5 give examples from the post-Yugoslav affective zones: a portrait of the leader appears as a gift and ruins a birthday party; his name is found spelled out in roses in a public park; small busts and bric-a-brac are sold at flea-markets. In different wa…

The aim of the paper is to analyze the Monument to the Peasant Revolt and Matija Gubec in Gornja Stubica as materialised memory of the past constructed in relation to present-day circumstances. The monument is approached through the prism of people who use it and bring it to life in diverse ways, with the emphasis on their cultural practices and performances in the memorial space.

Once a year the streets of Zagreb are filled with piles of junk, old stuff that the inhabitants of the town centre no longer need or want, cleaned out of attics, cellars, drawers and closets. It is carried out of front doors or thrown out of windows. And as the days proceed, the pavements and doorsteps become more and more difficult to pass through. Sometimes one gets a glimpse of previously well-known, but now long and often deliberately forgott…
