  • Direct evidentiality in the grammar of English: Must have in a London dialect

Open Access•Jenny Cheshire, David Hall et al.•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2026

The modal auxiliary form must plus perfect aspect ( must have +V- en ) has recently acquired the meaning of direct evidentiality in Multicultural London English, the new London dialect. Because the new meaning is a recent innovation we have a rare opportunity to witness its development at first hand, unlike earlier changes in the history of must. Our analysis supports the view that the classic definition of evidentiality in terms of information s…

  • Marxism, De-Mystification, and the State: The Strategic Link

    Open Access•Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS•ARTICLE•Contributions to Political Economy•2026

In The Myth of the Global Market: A Marxist Critique of Neoliberalism (2024), Giulia Palermo offers an incisive analysis of the methodological and ontological presuppositions underpinning both the neoclassical school and various heterodox schools of economic thought. In so doing, he provides a welcome reminder of the political role that university professors and other ‘traditional’ intellectuals play in the context of the global capitalist order.…

  • Still Changing: Semantic Innovation and Change in Multicultural London English

Open Access•Jenny Cheshire, Zoe Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of English Linguistics•2024

We attempt to further our understanding of the beginnings of language change by analyzing a semantic innovation in Multicultural London English: the use of still as a discourse-pragmatic item in utterance-final position. We show that the change follows well-attested processes of semantic change, so it could have occurred at any time and amongst any group of speakers. Its emergence now, amongst young men in inner city London, can be explained by c…

  • Algorithmic Management: A Radical Approach

    Open Access•Zoe Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Political…•2024

This article develops a radical legal critique of algorithmic management with a view to providing strategic guidance to radicals seeking to navigate the problems caused by algorithmic management in a way that contributes to their wider, radical, political objectives. Contributing to a “radical” tradition in legal scholarship, the article’s approach is distinctive for evaluating the merits and demerits of algorithmic management by reference to its…

  • (Why) Is Misinformation a Problem

Open Access•Zoe Adams, Magda Osman et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Psychological…•2023

In the last decade there has been a proliferation of research on misinformation. One important aspect of this work that receives less attention than it should is exactly why misinformation is a problem. To adequately address this question, we must first look to its speculated causes and effects. We examined different disciplines (computer science, economics, history, information science, journalism, law, media, politics, philosophy, psychology, s…

  • Variation in medical humanities program mission statements in United States and Canadian Medical Schools

Zoe Adams, Zoe M Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2023

PURPOSE: In 2019, the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) identified the discipline of medical humanities as a priority in medical education. Although medical humanities programs have existed in medical and osteopathic schools in the U.S. and Canada since the late 1960's, this interdisciplinary field remains difficult to define. We studied the mission statements of medical humanities programs to identify core themes and priorities. MA…

  • Trade Unions and the Law: A Materialist Perspective

    Open Access•Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS•ARTICLE•The Cambridge Law Journal•2023

This paper draws on Marxist scholarship concerning the law's emancipatory potential to shed new light on the history of UK trade unions, and their relationship with law. It traces the historical development of UK trade union law from the nineteenth century to the present day with a view to illustrating the importance of considering not just the content, but also the form, of law, in explaining the role of law in shaping the development of the tra…

  • Institutional trust, risk and product safety: A consumer survey

Zoe Adams, Magda Osman•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2023•References: 18

This study aims to expand our understanding of institutional trust by examining how consumers express their trust in a UK product safety regulator, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). It uses publicly available data from two waves of nationally representative surveys (N = 20,526) conducted by OPSS between November 2020 and August 2021. Questions were selected for analysis if they aligned with the organisation’s definition of a tru…

  • The Legal Concept of Work

    Zoe Adams•BOOK•Legal Concept of Work•2022

Drawing on a Marxian-inspired theoretical framework, The Legal Concept of Work develops an analysis of the legal constitution, conceptualization, and regulation of work as a lens through which to explore the emancipatory potential of law, and to understand whether, and if so how, law can be used to further struggles for structural and not merely surface-level change. The book explores how productive activities of various sorts come to be conceptu…

  • Online tribunal judgments and the limits of open justice

    Open Access•Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS et al.•ARTICLE•Legal Studies•2022

The principle of open justice is a constituent element of the rule of law: it demands publicity of legal proceedings, including the publication of judgments. Since 2017, the UK government has systematically published first instance Employment Tribunal decisions in an online repository. Whilst a veritable treasure trove for researchers and policy makers, the database also has darker potential – from automating blacklisting to creating new and syst…

  • Aspirational Work: A UK Labor Law Analysis

    Open Access•Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Political…•2022

This paper introduces the concept of aspirational work to highlight a common trend in the constitution and organization of work in neoliberal capitalism. It argues that aspirational work should be seen both as an example of displaced training and as an example of a form of work from which capital extracts surplus labor, albeit one which is not recognised as work in UK labor law. It goes on to explore the historical and structural factors that exp…

  • People’s understanding of the concept of misinformation

Magda Osman, Zoe Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 12

In the main, work has focused on defining and conceptualising the term misinformation, why and how people share misinformation, as well as the consequences for individual behaviour and policy making. Misinformation is an especially live issue in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and the communication that people use to inform their interpretations of risks, and claims about what is needed to reduce exposure and spread of the virus. However,…

  • Invisible labour: Legal Dimensions of Invisibilization

    Open Access•Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•2022•Cited by: 5

This article brings a legal perspective to bear on debates about invisible labour. It argues that we can better understand the causes and implications of invisible labour and its relationship with gender equality by engaging, first, with the law's role in constituting human labour as work, and, second, with how this role influences the way in which the law comes to conceptualize that work for the purposes of regulating it. The article focuses on …

  • Verbal interaction in a social dilemma

Open Access•Zoe Adams, Agata Ludwiczak et al.•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2022•References: 57

This study presents the first sociolinguistic examination of communication in a social dilemma. 90 participants (18 groups of 5) completed a modified public goods game with 2 rounds: an effort-based task and an unscripted online chat about the results. A linear regression shows that consensus-building language in the Round 1 chat affects cooperative behaviour in the Round 2 task. A qualitative analysis of 3 groups explores how participants use di…

  • Labour and the Wage: A Critical Perspective

    Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS•BOOK•Labour and the Wage•2020

The book uses a Marxian inspired social ontological framework, and a genealogic method to explore the relationship between labour law, the market, and capitalist social relations. It advances a constitutive conception of the law–market and law–society ‘relationship’ that stresses law’s contradictory roles in the emergence and reproduction of capitalist social relations—and, relatedly, in the emergence, and reproduction, of the (capitalist) market…

Forty-seven participants from Tayside, East Scotland, first completed an implicit task which asked participants to judge the truth value of 120 trivia statements, divided into six different accents, as quickly as possible. This was complimented by an identical written task at the end…

  • Institutional Solutions to Precariousness and Inequality in Labour Markets

    Open Access•Zoe Adams, Z O E ADAMS et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Industrial…•2014

It has become widely assumed that the standard employment relationship ( SER ) is in irreversible decline in industrialized societies. However, non‐standard and precarious work relationships often complement the SER via labour market transitions, and are not displacing it as the focal point of labour market regulation. The co‐ordination and risk management functions of the SER continue to be relevant in market economies, and the SER is adjusting …
