  • Agricultural modernisation, and the distribution of benefits: Some evidence from Malaysia

R T Shand, Kaliappa Kalirajan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1991

Using covariance analysis, this cross‐sectional study of samples of farmers from a mature irrigation project in Malaysia showed that, even with favourable access to resources there were significant differences in production technologies between socio‐economic groups within the irrigation project. The new rice technology was neither size group nor tenure neutral. The effective use of the technology improved up to a medium size group of three to fi…

  • Firm and product‐specific technical efficiencies in a multiproduct cycle system

Kaliappa Kalirajan, K P Kalirajan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1988

Measures of technical efficiency were estimated using stochastic translog production frontiers for a sample of farmers operating in a rainfed area in India. These estimates were farm‐specific as opposed to being based on deviation from an average sample efficiency. In contrast to other studies, farm‐specific efficiency estimates were obtained for farmers growing multiple outputs in which the production levels were interrelated and each product wa…

With a yield function that gave a maximum attainable yield, and the yield performance of the farmers in relation to this, and with multiple classification analysis of the differences between the maximum and actual yields, it was found that the level of formal education of farmers was not a significant factor, but that farmers’ non‐formal education (understanding of the technology), which was independent of formal education, was a significant infl…

  • Farmers’ long‐term investment decisions: A study of Sri Lankan rubber smallholders

Sisira Jayasuriya, Colin Barlow et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1981

Planting and replanting of perennial crops confronts small farmers with a long‐term investment decision. In this study, we analyse the behaviour of rubber smallholders in Sri Lanka when faced with a replacement decision. An intertemporal profit maximizing model (maximizing discounted stream of expected future net revenues) predicts behaviour of larger, hired labour using farmers quite well. The model can also be extended successfully to smaller, …
