  • The Taiwan strait triangle

    William M Carpenter•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•2000•Cited by: 1

This article examines the ongoing set of relationships among the United States, the People's Republic of China, and the Republic of China on Taiwan. This has been a difficult strategic (political, economic and military) problem for the United States over the half century since communist forces drove Chiang Kai‐shek and his Nationalist forces from the mainland to refuge on Taiwan in 1949. The situation of “two Chinas” has persisted all through the…

  • The U.S. navy beyond the year 2000: A strategic forcast

    William M Carpenter•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1988•References: 2

The design of a national strategy requires a forecast of the international strategic environment. The forecast is made by trend analysis, taking account of certain factors, such as the natures of the U.S. and Soviet regimes, that are not likely to change and of other factors, such as state of military technology, that may undergo rapid or significant change. The role of the U.S. Navy in future U.S. strategy is projected, embracing the spectrum of…

  • Japanese views on defense burden‐sharing

    William M Carpenter, Stephen P Gibert•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1982

For more than three decades after World War II, the United States has carried the main burden of the defense of Japan and the preservation of security and stability in Northeast Asia. Clearly the time has come for Japan, now the second largest economic power in the world, to take up an appropriate share of the defense burden. It is also quite clear, however, that there are significant gaps in perception between American and Japanese defense exper…

  • The Korean war: A strategic perspective thirty years later

    William M Carpenter•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1980•References: 1

Comparing the strategic environment of the world of 1950 with that of 1980, there are more similarities than differences. With the benefit of hindsight, we can see that an American image of weakness and indecision very probably contributed to the decision to start the Korean War (whether by Russia, China, North Korea, or combinations of these). One major difference in the situations then and now is that the USSR and China are adversaries rather t…
