  • Some principles of cost-benefit analysis of family planning services in developing countries

    H V Muhsam, Toni Montesinos•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1975•References: 8

A number of controversial issues are discussed, relating to the assessment of both costs and benefits of family planning services. All costs and benefits, whether accruing to society or the parents of the child whose birth is averted, and the child itself, should be included in the analysis, even if they cannot easily be measured or appear as externalities. Different rates of interest to be used in discounting to obtain present values apply to va…

  • The Marriage Squeeze

    Open Access•H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•Demography•1974•Cited by: 15•References: 4

If the sex-age structure of the population is equilibrated, observed marriage patterns are assumed to reflect preferred mate selections. With regard to age, these preferences can be expressed in terms of the probabilities of unmarried persons of given ages marrying persons of various ages. To study the situation of unequilibrated sexes, these probabilities can be used to compute, for each combination of ages of groom and bride, the expected numbe…

  • Population Growth and Costs of Education in Developing Countries

    H V Muhsam, Ta Ngoc Chau•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1974

  • A World Population Policy for the World Population Year

    Open Access•H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•1973•References: 1

World population problems have remained the con cern of demographers and historians. Even today, when politicians or international organizations deal with such questions, they consider them either an individual and personal, or a specifically internal and national problem, rather than viewing the population issue from a global perspective. The author argues that individual and national population decisions impinge on broader interests- illustrate…

  • Sur les relations entre la croissance de la population et le développement économique

    Open Access•H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•Population•1970

    H V Muhsam, Abdelkader Zghal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1968

  • Population estimates based on census enumeration and coverage check

    H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1960

No population survey is exempt from omissions and erroneous inclusions. This is also true for post-enumeration surveys, performed in order to check the reliability of a census count. It is therefore a dangerous procedure to rely on such a check as if it were perfectly correct. It can, however, be shown that, under certain reasonable assumptions, three consecutive enumerations of the same population, a census, a census check and a check on the che…

  • Fertility of polygamous marriages

    H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1956

This paper discusses the suitability of data on the fertility of polygamous marriages for drawing inferences on the effect of coital frequency on fertility. The author concludes that it may be possible to utilise these data, provided polygamous husbands distribute their sexual activity among all their wives, so that coital frequency for a polygamous wife is lower than that of a monogamous one. Polygamous Arab Beduin may be supposed to have interc…

  • The Factor Analysis of a Simple Object

    H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1951

  • Fertility and reproduction of the Beduin

    H V Muhsam•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1951•Cited by: 2•References: 1

A number of inquiries relating to the fertility of the nomadic Arab inhabitants of Palestine are described. From an examination of the results the author reaches the conclusion that the fertility of the nomadic Arabs is slightly lower than that of the settled Moslem inhabitants of Palestine
