    James W Marchand•ARTICLE•Language•1957•Cited by: 4

[The question of the phonemic status of *i and *e in Proto-Germanic hinges on the acceptance of two alleged sound-changes, *e to *i before *u, and *i to *e before a -sounds. If we deny the occurrence of these two sound changes, as most recent treatments of the problem do, then *i and * e are members of different phonemes. It is shown here, however, that the two sound changes can be defended. It is therefore assumed that *i and *e were members of …

  • The Gothic Evidence for “Euthalian Matter”

    Open Access•James W Marchand•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1956

It is a well-known fact that, sometime between the 4th and 7th centuries, a recension of the NT, or at least of the Pauline and Catholic epistles, into thought-lines was made. This recension is attributed variously to Euthalius, to Evagrius, even to Pamphilius. In spite of the fact that its authorship is unclear, this recension into thought-lines, along with certain other matter which is normally found with it, is traditionally called “Euthalian …
