Career decision-making as dynamic semiosis: Autoethnographic trajectory equifinality modeling
This study aims to describe and analyze the career decision-making of the first author in the context of life trajectory using autoethnographic trajectory equifinality modeling (Auto-TEM). The life story and analysis of the first author indicate that career decision-making is a constant pre-constructive process in the life trajectory of an individual. This process is a semiotic and trans-action one between the individual and society. In other wor…
A Case Study of Transductive Resolution: Analyzing the Practice of Inclusive Education for a Girl with down’s Syndrome at an Elementary School in Japan
Comparisons of Daily Behavior Across 21 Countries
While a large body of research has investigated cultural differences in behavior, this typical study assesses a single behavioral outcome, in a single context, compared across two countries. The current study compared a broad array of behaviors across 21 countries ( N = 5,522). Participants described their behavior at 7:00 p.m. the previous evening using the 68 items of the Riverside Behavioral Q-sort (RBQ). Correlations between average patterns …
The World at 7: 00: Comparing the Experience of Situations Across 20 Countries
The purpose of this research is to quantitatively compare everyday situational experience around the world. Local collaborators recruited 5,447 members of college communities in 20 countries, who provided data via a Web site in 14 languages. Using the 89 items of the Riverside Situational Q‐sort (RSQ), participants described the situation they experienced the previous evening at 7:00 p.m. Correlations among the average situational profiles of eac…

History of “History of Psychology” in Japan
Only a few Japanese psychologists have been interested in the history of psychology. The historiography—or the methodology of historical description—for the history of psychology has been ignored. Moreover, chairs for professors, academic journals, academic meetings, and an archive of the history of psychology remain to be established. In this paper, the history of the “history of psychology” in Japan is explored. This academic sub‐discipline has…

Demographic and behavioral characteristics of non-sex worker females attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in Japan: A nationwide case-control study
These results indicate that not only multiple partnerships or unprotected sex with casual partners, but also unprotected vaginal sex within a regular partnership is prevalent among non-SW female STI clinic attendees. The identical sexual behavior patterns observed between female attendees with a current STI diagnosis and those without, and between those attendees with a past history of STI diagnosis and those without, indicate that the result are…
Contrasting tactics in deceptive impression management
The deceptive tactics used to manipulate impressions people gave to others of themselves and other individuals were investigated. In the first phase, all participants told about the most memorable event that happened yesterday. In the second phase, one group of participants in the self-aggrandizement condition were asked to distort the original statement to give the impression that they were competent or socially desirable. Another group of parti…
The Effect of Negatively Worded Measures of Self-Esteem on Children
Low self-esteem in learning disabled or emotionally disturbed children has been reported as a result of their failures in various social and educational settings (e.g., Conley, Ghavami, Vonohlen, & Foulkes, 2007). To verify such a decline, a number of self-esteem scales have been used in research. These usually utilize positive and negative items. For example, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES; Rosenberg, 1965) has five positive descriptions …
Sex Differences in Beliefs about Cues to Deception
Sex differences in beliefs among Japanese students about cues to deception were explored. 171 participants (91 women, 80 men) read a scenario in which a protagonist caused a fatal traffic accident and told a lie to avoid responsibility. Then participants rated how the protagonist's behaviors would change when lying. Women participants believed significantly more than men that a liar shows body cues (e.g., body touching, biting lips) associated wi…

The early 20th century: Shaping the discipline of psychology in Japan 1
In this paper, we aim to describe the developing process of early Japanese psychology. This is the story of the institutionalization of psychology in Japan. We deal with the first period of Japanese psychology and trace the process of shaping the discipline of psychology in Japan. We also focus on the life and studies of Motora, who was the first psychology professor in Japan, and those of his students. In 1903, Yuzero Motora opened the first for…
The history of psychology in Japan
In 1903, a new laboratory of psychology was established in Tokyo Imperial University (now University of Tokyo) by Professor Motora in collaboration with Matsumoto, one of Motora's students, who was a lecturer in psychology. The establishment of this new laboratory was one of the milestones of Japanese psychology. It was a wooden, one-storey house. In it, sensitive psychological experiments could be conducted in an ideal environment, because there…
