Early Lithic Technology in South America
The lithic technology developed by human groups older than 11,300 cal BP is reviewed based on the current information available for South America. During the Last Glacial Maximum the data is still fragmentary and scarce. Subsequently, in the postglacial period, between ~16,000 and 13,500 cal BP, there is a small set of sites, ones suggesting a simple retouched flake product of an unsophisticated technology; others present rough bifacial lithic re…
Fishtail Technology: Archaeological and Experimental Evidence
This paper proposes a hypothetical reconstruction of Fishtail point production and expected byproducts based on extensive replication compared to original Fishtail points, which elucidates hitherto unknown aspects of Fishtail technology. The sample of Uruguay's Fishtail points presents exceptional conditions to carry out this research; there is a large sample of complete points in a relatively small region of South America, from the selection of …

Urban-scale building assessment and energy vulnerability mapping through an interactive geo-referenced web tool: Demonstration applicability to southern Spain
Building decarbonization through energy renovation is a key challenge across the European Union, particularly in social housing sectors marked by high vulnerability. To support this goal, this study introduces a GIS-based open-access web tool for evaluating the energy performance and social vulnerability of the existing residential stock at the urban scale. The tool integrates data from public and open-source databases into a georeferenced enviro…
Early settlements in the Uruguay river basin: A new reading based on recent data from Uruguay and Brazil
Household energy vulnerability evaluation in southern Spain through parametric energy simulation models and socio-economic data
When proposing the most suitable strategies for retrofitting the residential stock it is essential to consider energy vulnerability, the current state of stock, users’ economic capacity and climate. This work analyses energy vulnerability on regional and neighbourhood scale, applied to the social housing stock in southern Spain. Three key vulnerability indicators are assessed through extensive public databases and validated parametric energy simu…
New sites and challenges in prehistoric archaeology of Uruguay: Recurrent Occupations in Caves, Rockshelters and Earthen Mounds
Systematic investigation of caves and rockshelters in Uruguay is revealing the archaeological importance of these sites and their association with earthen mounds. Multiple periods of human occupation at Tamanduá rockshelter are revealed through stratigraphic analysis, and radiocarbon dates suggest recurrent occupation from the Early Holocene up to the historic period
The initial peopling of South American Plains: An overview on Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene settlers in Uruguay
Mobility and raw material procurement by Fishtail people in Uruguay: Evaluation of silcrete long distance transport between campsites and outcrops during the late Pleistocene (ca. 12,900–12,250 cal BP…
Reflections to Advance the Collaborative Production of Knowledge and Protection of Archaeological Heritage in Uruguay
In Uruguay, there are records of archaeological collections at least since Darwin's visit in 1832. Since then, the role of collections and collectors has been changing in relation to official institutions, researchers, and professional archaeologists. In the years following the creation of the university degree in anthropology, during the 1980s and 1990s, academic and official speeches considered collectors one of the greatest threats to the deve…
Addressing the potential for improvement of urban building stock: A protocol applied to a Mediterranean Spanish case
Fluted Triangular Non-stemmed Points in Uruguay and Their Extra-regional Relationship: Broadening Technological Diversity during the Early Holocene of South America
Triangular non-stemmed points (TNSPs) have been recovered for several decades from early archaeological sites in different regions of South America. We report a synthesis and review of 63 early Holocene radiocarbon dates (∼12,650–8050 cal yr BP) of the main sites where TNSPs have been recovered and records of this point design with fluting technology. The oldest ages of dated sites with TNSPs are synchronous with ages obtained for Fishtail point …

Fishtail Points, Blades, and Preforms and the Paleoamerican Occupation of the Yí River (Uruguay): New Evidence from La Palomita
This paper presents unpublished data of La Palomita (Uruguay), an archaeological site where Paleoamerican lithic material was recovered. Namely, two Fishtail points, preforms, and several blades are described. In northern Uruguay, evidence of a blade technology (blades and cores) was previously recovered in buried Paleoamerican sites dated between 12,800 and 11,300 cal yr BP. We conclude that the artifacts recovered from La Palomita suggest the p…

Archaeoacoustics of intangible cultural heritage: The sound of the Maior Ecclesia of Cluny
The Paleoamerican Occupation of the Plains of Uruguay: Technology, Adaptations, and Mobility
This paper presents results of investigation of an early archaeological site in Uruguay, and considers its position on a regional scale. Pay Paso 1 is the first early site of Uruguay to yield both artifacts and faunal remains including records of Pleistocene fauna (Equus sp. and Glyptodon sp.) in a radiocarbon-dated stratigraphic context. From stratigraphic, chronological and archaeological observations, three cultural components for the Pleistoc…

The main objective of this investigation is to obtain basic data that will allow the generation of cultural, geoarchaeological, paleoenvironmental and paleoecological knowledge about the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. In turn, this will facilitate the discussion of different topics about the peopling of Uruguay within the context of the peopling of America. The study presents a detailed investigation carried out at the Pay Paso locality, which …
