    In the 1760’s and the 1770’s Charles Mason of Gloucestershire and Jeremiah Dixon of the County of Durham were in the service of the Royal Society many times and their names were often heard in Council meetings.     The Society has recently purchased a collection of original letters, manuscripts, reports and printed papers formed by Sir Charles Blagden, who served on the Council for thirtyTour years and was one of the Secretaries of the Society for thirteen years.     The work that Robert Hooke performed for the Royal Society over a period of forty years is well known. His many inventions and experiments have been the subject of numerous papers and there are few standard scientific works which do not record some aspect of his achievements, The fact that he was surveyor to the City of London after the Great Fire is also recorded, but it is not generally appreciated that he was an architect of no mean ability
