  • Linguistic Evolution through Language Acquisition

Open Access•E J Briscoe, Michael Oliphant et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Linguistic evolution through…•2002

This is a study of how children acquire language and how this affects language change over generations. Written by an international team of experts, the volume proceeds from the basis that we can not only address the language faculty per se within the framework of evolutionary theory, but also the origins and subsequent development of languages themselves; languages evolve via cultural rather than biological transmission on a historical rather th…

  • Grammatical Acquisition

    Ted Briscoe•ARTICLE•Language•2000•Cited by: 5

An account of grammatical acquisition is developed within the parameter setting framework applied to a generalized categorial grammar (GCG). The GCG is embedded in a default inheritance network yielding a natural partial ordering (reflecting generality) of parameters that determines a partial order for parameter setting. Computational simulation shows that several resulting acquisition procedures are effective on a parameter set expressing major …

  • Early Anglian Catterick and Catraeth

    Peter R Wilson, Peter Cardwell et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The evidence from scattered excavations undertaken over several decades in Catterick is brought together and assessed. The evidence of both settlement and burial indicates activity in the early Anglian period. Indications of status and ethnicity are discussed, and set within their historical context

  • Semi-productive Polysemy and Sense Extension

Ann Copestake, Ted Briscoe•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•1995

In this paper we discuss various aspects of systematic or conventional polysemy and their formal treatment within an implemented constraint-based approach to linguistic representation. We distinguish between two classes of systematic polysemy: constructional polysemy, where a single sense assigned to a lexical entry is contextually specialized, and sense extension, which predictably relates two or more senses. Formally the first case is treated a…
