  • UK wildlife recorders cautiously welcome range‐shifting species but incline against intervention to promote or control their establishment

Open Access•James Cranston, Sarah Crowley et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2022

The global redistribution of species due to climate change and other anthropogenic causes is driving novel human–wildlife interactions with complex consequences. On the one hand, range‐shifting species could disrupt recipient ecosystems. On the other hand, these species may be contracting in their historic range, contributing to loss of biodiversity there. Given that arriving range‐shifting species could also perhaps have positive effects on reci…

  • In Memoriam Emeritus Professor John Dominic Lynch (8 July 1946 – 25 May 2021)

    Open Access•Robert Early, M Spriggs•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2022•References: 1

The descriptive and historical linguist, John Lynch, died in Port Vila, Vanuatu, aged 74 in May 2021. His linguistic lineage was a particularly distinguished one. He was proud to say that as an undergraduate at Sydney University from 1964-8 he had been the final student of Pacific and Australian language scholar Arthur Capell (1902-1986), gaining from him a particular appreciation for the languages of southern Vanuatu, and writing an obituary upo…

  • Envisioning a resilient future for biodiversity conservation in the wake of the Covid‐19 pandemic

    Open Access•Ruth H Thurstan, Kimberley J Hockings et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2021

As the COVID‐19 pandemic continues to affect societies across the world, the ongoing economic and social disruptions are likely to present fundamental challenges for current and future biodiversity conservation. We review the literature for outcomes of past major societal, political, economic and zoonotic perturbations on biodiversity conservation, and demonstrate the complex implications of perturbation events upon conservation efforts. Building…

  • Understanding the combined impacts of weeds and climate change on crops

Open Access•Montserrat Vilà, Evelyn M Beaury et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Crops worldwide are simultaneously affected by weeds, which reduce yield, and by climate change, which can negatively or positively affect both crop and weed species. While the individual effects of environmental change and of weeds on crop yield have been assessed, the combined effects have not been broadly characterized. To explore the simultaneous impacts of weeds with changes in climate-related environmental conditions on future food producti…

  • Double Trouble, and Three is a Crowd

    Robert Early•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1999•Cited by: 2

At independence in 1980 Vanuatu's Constitution declared that English, French and Bislama (Melanesian pidgin English) are official languages, Bislama is the national language, and English and French are the principal languages of education. Also, protection is guaranteed for the 105 Oceanic vernacular languages spoken by the Melanesian population (170,000). Further, the Constitution requires that the Ombudsman report to Parliament annually on the …

  • Nuclear Layer Serialization in Lewo

    Robert Early•ARTICLE•Oceanic Linguistics•1993

Lewo is spoken on Epi Island in Vanuatu. In Lewo, nuclear layer serialization is very widespread. However, the process of incorporation has progressed to the extent that most of the serialized verbs have become morphologically indistinguishable from a class of verbal suffixes. In 1982, Crowley described for Paamese a class of postverbal adjunct modifier particles. His 1987 reanalysis presented the same form as nuclear layer serialized verbs. He s…
