    Open Access•Dionysis Goutsos•ARTICLE•Russian Journal of Linguistics•2025

The paper offers an overview of the frequency and functions of three basic interjections in Greek, the phonologically minimal α /a/ ‘ah, huh’, ε /e/ ‘eh’ and ω or ο /o/ ‘oh’, with the aim of identifying the full range of their uses that have not been dealt with in the literature, which mainly treats them as elements denoting emotions. The data comes from a variety of Modern Greek corpora, including the conversational and the literary sub-corpora …

  • Sequential and interpersonal aspects of English and Greek answering machine messages

    Open Access•Dionysis Goutsos•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2022

The paper studies the genre of answering machine messages (AMMs) in English and Greek from a comparative linguistic perspective. The analysis of extensive data in both languages shows that the length of most AMMs is restricted (25 to 30 words) and related to the gender of the caller rather than the language used. It is also found that Greek and English AMMs follow the same generic pattern, consisting of three main phases (opening, main body and c…

In this paper we examine the discourse on political corruption, with a focus on accusations of corruption and the self-defence discourse of the accused person. For this purpose, we study the discourse of the corruption scandal related with the Greek ex-Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos in 2011, as presented in articles published in the newspaper I Kathimerini. • A discourse‐analytic approach to the use of English in Cypriot Greek conversations

    Open Access•Dionysis Goutsos•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The use of English in Cypriot Greek has been a highly contested issue, involving much speculation and prescription but, as yet, little analysis of actual data. This study is a preliminary exploration of the issue, focusing on extensive data from informal conversations between members of a Limassol family. The analysis suggests that instances of language alternation can be accounted for in terms of discourse analytic categories such as the distinc…

  • Mapping the world of discourse: The narrative vs. non-narrative distinction

    Open Access•A Georgakopoulou, Dionysis Goutsos•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 2
