A Passion for DNA
This collection of essays, some of which are specifically autobiographical, is in effect a sequel to The Double Helix. They are bound to send the reader hustling to TDH for a reread, and perhaps particularly to the edition produced under the direction of Gunther Stent in 1980, with republication of the original Nature papers of 1953 and of reviews of TDH that appeared after its publication in 1968. (The year 1968 was a particularly significant on…
The Sequence of the Human Genome
A 2.91-billion base pair (bp) consensus sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome was generated by the whole-genome shotgun sequencing method. The 14.8-billion bp DNA sequence was generated over 9 months from 27,271,853 high-quality sequence reads (5.11-fold coverage of the genome) from both ends of plasmid clones made from the DNA of five individuals. Two assembly strategies—a whole-genome assembly and a regional chromosome assembl…
The Century of the Gene (review)
Evelyn Fox Keller opens her monograph as follows: "In 1900 three papers appeared in the same volume of the Proceedings of the German Botanical Society [title translated by Keller]. . . . [Three botanists] had independently 'rediscovered' the rules of inheritance [of] Gregor Mendel" (p. 1). This rediscovery opened what Keller calls "the century of the gene." Her book suggests that the twenty-first century will be, as others have suggested, the cen…
