"Was ich noch sagen wollte…"
During the past three decades Norbert Boretzky (born 1935 in Breslau) has contributed excellent scholarly work in an impressive variety of subject matters in various linguistic subdisciplines. Among his many scientific achievements, his groundbreaking research in the field of Pidgin and Creole language studies stands out much in the same way as his well-renowned and well-received publications in Balkan linguistics, Albanian linguistics, Slavic ph…
South Balkan II as a Romani dialect branch
Various suggestions have been made on how to classify the large number of Romani dialects, but the proposed classifications should be put on firmer ground by drawing on as many details as possible. It is very difficult to find features exclusively characteristic of the individual groups. The three dialects subsumed here under ‘South Balkan II’ undoubtedly form a densely coherent group, mainly due to a number of typical sound changes (palatalisati…
Contact-Induced Sound Change
Sound interference can manifest itself either in the modification of sounds under foreign influence or in the transfer of new sounds together with loan-words, and even in the transfer not of sounds, but of sound change triggered by a foreign language; i.e., the sound change is carried out on inherited lexical material under the same conditions as in the model language. In this paper, two instances of the latter, rather rare, type are discussed: T…

The Indo-Europeanist Model of Sound Change and Genetic Affinity, and Change in Exotic Languages
Though, in European language families, sound change is for the most part governed by rules that can be precisely formulated, several exotic groups (as, for instance, the Arantic family of Australia and the Papuan Kate group examined here) appear to behave differently. At least, this conclusion must be drawn from the sound shapes of seman-tically comparable items in each of the groups. The languages of each group differ etymologically to a greater…
