English medieval bridge crosses and shrines
Until the Reformation in the mid-16th century, many English bridges were adorned with a variety of symbols of Christian piety, including chapels, crosses, and statues, as a public reminder that building and maintaining bridges were considered pious and charitable deeds. Surviving examples of ecclesiastical bridge monuments are very rare in England and often poorly documented. Almost all examples of these relatively common medieval ecclesiastical …
Red Navy at Sea
This is the only book to offer a detailed chronology of modern Soviet naval operations set within the framework of long-range Soviet foreign and domestic policy. This context is important because it puts the navy in its proper place as a significant cog in the gigantic machinery of Soviet "grand strategy." Commander Watson argues that the Soviet Navy's physical configuration, strategy, and operations reflect a long-term "upgrading" pattern, desig…
Suffolk Place, Southwark, London
Suffolk Place (c. 1518–22), Southwark, was the London residence of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. This majestic palace is visible in the foreground of Wyngaerde’s London panorama (c. 1544), from which it can be inferred that it possessed a double courtyard plan. The southern and eastern ranges of the outer courtyard of Suffolk Place were apparently adorned with architectural terracottas at both entablature and parapet level. As the palace was …
The Man and the Woman and the Edison Phonograph
This is the story behind a photo of Fanny Cochrane Smith singing traditional Tasmanian songs, and being recorded by Horace Watson, in 1903. Fanny Cochrane was the first Aboriginal child born on Flinders Island in 1834, in the settlement established for Tasmania’s Aboriginal people. She claimed to be the last Tasmanian. Tasmania’s and Australia’s history reverberate through this image: cultural contact, genocide and reconciliation, tradition and m…
A Gilt-Bronze Arm from London
The left hand and forearm from a slightly over life-size bronze or copper-alloy arm was excavated during 2001 at 20–30 Gresham Street, within the City of London. It was discarded in a quarry pit, which fooded with groundwater turning it into a pond and was subsequently backflled C.A.D. 60–70. The arm was presumably part of a public statue, perhaps of an emperor or god, which had been deliberately broken up. The Boudican revolt of A.D. 60/1 is one…
Incremental Construction of Minimal Acyclic Finite-State Automata
In this paper, we describe a new method for constructing minimal, deterministic, acyclic finite-state automata from a set of strings. Traditional methods consist of two phases: the first to construct a trie, the second one to minimize it. Our approach is to construct a minimal automaton in a single phase by adding new strings one by one and minimizing the resulting automaton on-the-fly. We present a general algorithm as well as a specialization t…
