Taking a stance with pragmatic borrowings

Accounting for changes in series of vocalisations - Professional vision in a gym-training session
This paper presents a study of vocalisations, i.e., non-lexical sounds, in video-filmed sessions of gym training where one personal trainer (PT) and three clients are working out together. The object of study are series of vocalisations performed in connection with series of physical exercises, and the participants' orientation to change in such series is explained using the notion of professional vision (Goodwin 1994, 2013, 2018). We use sequent…
Explicit positive assessments in personal training
This paper examines explicit positive assessments (EPAs) in personal training, that is, the personal trainer’s positive evaluations of the client’s physical performance, including comments such as bra (‘good’). The data consist of video-recorded training-sessions in Swedish from Finland and Sweden. The methodological framework is interactional linguistics, and the study explores the actions that EPAs perform as well as their linguistic design and…
Pseudo-cleft constructions in Swedish talk-in-interaction
In this study we present an interactional linguistic analysis of pseudoclefts in Swedish based on audio and video recordings of everyday and institutional conversations, resulting in a collection of 100 instances. There is variation in the degree to which pseudo-cleft constructions are syntactically integrated: from fully integrated biclausal constructions (cleft clause + copula verb + main clause) to non-copular variants and further to variants …
Other-repetition sequences in Finland Swedish
This study examines other-repetitions in Finland Swedish talk-in-interaction: their sequential trajectories, prosodic design, and lexicogrammatical features. The key objective is to explore how prosody can contribute to the action conveyed by a repetition turn, that is, whether it deals with a problem of hearing or understanding, a problem of expectation, or just registers receipt of information. The analysis shows that large and upgraded prosodi…
