  • Representing, rewriting and intervening: The perils and joys of creating an alternative curriculum on science and religion

Juhem Navarro, Jaume Navarro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2026

Pedagogy in science and religion, like pedagogy in most other fields, does more than just represent the state of a discipline. It also formulates and, in many cases, defines its subject matter. This article describes an attempt to take the pedagogical dimension of science-and-religion seriously on its own terms, through the creation of a course aimed at what might loosely described as non-Anglophone European and Latin-American audiences. The firs…

  • Killed by its own obituaries: Explaining the demise of the ether

    Open Access•Juhem Navarro, Jaume Navarro•ARTICLE•Science in Context•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

ArgumentIn this paper I follow the demise of the ether in the first half of the twentieth century to show how the first obituaries of the ether were instrumental in creating an object with specific and largely simplified properties related to, but different from, nineteenth-century ethers. I suggest that writing the history of dead objects (or objects an author wants to be dead) is not epistemologically neutral but, on the contrary, it involves a…

  • Whittaker, Einstein, and the History of the Aether: Alternative interpretation, blunder, or bigotry

    Open Access•Juhem Navarro•ARTICLE•History of Science•2021

Edmund T. Whittaker's second edition of his A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity is famous for his treatment of Einstein as an almost irrelevant character in the emergence of what he called "the relativity theory of Poincaré and Lorentz." Historians of science have given a number of explanations, which include Whittaker's scientific conservatism as an old classical physicist, his commitment to the ether, the pre-eminent role he att…

  • Ether and Modernity

Juhem Navarro, Jaume Navarro•BOOK•Ether and Modernity•2018

This book is a snapshot of the ether qua epistemic object in the early twentieth century. It shows that the ether was not necessarily regarded as the residue of old-fashioned science, but often as one of the objects of modernity, hand in hand with the electron, radioactivity or X-rays. Instrumental in this was the emergence of wireless technologies and radio broadcasting, which brought the ether into social audiences who would otherwise have neve…

  • How to Use a Fundamental Discovery in Physics: The Early Days of Electron Diffraction

    Open Access•Juhem Navarro•ARTICLE•Science in Context•2018

Argument The discovery of electron diffraction by George Paget Thomson in Aberdeen and Clinton J. Davisson and Lester H. Germer at the Bell Labs has often been portrayed as an example of independent discovery. Neither team was particularly interested in the developments of the nascent quantum theory but they both ended up demonstrating one of the most striking experimental consequences of the new physics. This paper traces the aftermath of this d…

  • Oracles, Prophets and the Exoteric Circles of Science and Religion

    Open Access•Juhem Navarro, Jaume Navarro•ARTICLE•Scientia et Fides•2016

Drawing upon Karl Giberson and Mariano Artigas’ joint book The Oracles of Science, I discuss the limits of an emphasis on so-called philosophical bridges in the relationship between science and religion. Epistemological and metaphysical analyses of the claims by scientists and religious people are indeed necessary to avoid illegitimate extrapolations; but a clear separation between scientific and religious statements is problematic. Following Lud…

  • Electron diffraction chez Thomson: Early responses to quantum physics in Britain

Open Access•Juhem Navarro, Jaume Navarro•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2010•References: 6

In 1927, George Paget Thomson, professor at the University of Aberdeen, obtained photographs that he interpreted as evidence for electron diffraction. These photographs were in total agreement with de Broglie's principle of wave–particle duality, a basic tenet of the new quantum wave mechanics. His experiments were an initially unforeseen spin-off from a project he had started in Cambridge with his father, Joseph John Thomson, on the study of pos…

  • Tomorrow is Already Here, Or is it? Steps in Preventing a Local Methamphetamine Outbreak

    M Singer, Greg Mirhej et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2006

This paper reports on a research-driven community-based effort to assess the potential for a local methamphetamine drug epidemic and to build a public campaign to head off or at least minimize the potentially severe health and social costs of the spread of a powerful stimulant drug like methamphetame to a new area. Drawing on diverse national and local datasets, as well as on several years of monitoring changing drug use patterns and analysing il…

  • When the Drug of Choice Is a Drug of Confusion: Embalming Fluid Use in Inner City Hartford, CT

M Singer, Greg Mirhej et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2005

This paper examines the use of a new illicit drug--embalming fluid mixtures--in Hartford, CT based on a recent assessment of drug consumption in an outreach-recruited sample of 242 not-in-treatment active drug users. Sociodemographic, drug use, and health and social problems of drug users who do and do not use embalming fluid mixture are presented, revealing some notable differences between these two groups of street drug users. Despite regular c…

  • Under the Counter: The Diffusion of Narcotic Analgesics to the Inner City Street

James Vivian, Hassan Saleheen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2005

During the past decade, there has been a well-documented rise in the non-medical use of prescription painkillers, often referred to as narcotics analgesics (NA). Relatively little is known, however, about who these users are, the range of health and social consequences associated with their use, and the presence of illicit NA use on the inner city street. Results of a survey conducted with a sample of 242 street drug users indicated that NA use i…
