Gestational kynurenine metabolites mediate effects of pregnancy adiposity on child negative affect
BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence links increased adiposity during pregnancy and offspring risk for mental health disorders. Yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood, limiting our ability to design effective interventions. We hypothesize that alterations in the kynurenine system of the pregnant woman help to explain this association. METHODS: Participants were recruited during pregnancy with repeated assessments through…
The association between heightened ADHD symptoms and cytokine and fatty acid concentrations during pregnancy
Pregnant individuals with ADHD, on average, had higher plasma n-6:n-3s and higher TNF-α concentrations relative to controls. A difference was not detected in their dietary intake of fatty acids or other relevant nutrients. Though these null findings are inconclusive, they are consistent with the hypothesis that ADHD-associated differences in plasma fatty acid concentrations are the result of ADHD-associated differences in fatty acid metabolism, r…
Trajectories of perinatal depressive symptoms in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic
This study sought to advance understanding of the potential long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for child development by characterizing trajectories of maternal perinatal depression, a common and significant risk factor for adverse child outcomes. Data came from 393 women (86% White, 8% Latina; mean age = 33.51 years) recruited during pregnancy (n = 247; mean gestational age = 22.94 weeks) or during the first year postpartum (n = 146;…
The effects of maternal obesity on anxiety, stress response and food preference of juvenile Japanese macaques
Behaviors in rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) associated with activity counts measured by accelerometer
There are large individual differences in the daily pattern and level of physical activity in humans and other species. As it is becoming apparent that activity plays an integral role in a number of physiological processes including arousal, attention, cardiovascular health and body weight regulation, there is an increased interest in quantifying activity. Nonhuman primates are particularly useful experimental models for such studies in that they…
