Higher nicotine dependence and greater smoking abstinence in parental than non-parental smokers
Objective Parental smokers account for approximately one-third of smokers worldwide and often exhibit distinct smoking and quitting behaviors compared to non-parental smokers. Understanding these differences is crucial for developing targeted cessation interventions; however, current evidence remains limited. Methods This secondary analysis pooled individual participant data from 10 community-based smoking cessation trials conducted in Hong Kong …
Older age at smoking initiation predicts successful cessation in adults who smoke
Association between tobacco industry denormalisation beliefs and support for tobacco endgame policies
Stronger TID belief was associated with greater support for total bans on tobacco sales and use. TID intervention may increase support for tobacco endgame, especially in current smokers
Increase of unmotivated and hardened smokers in Hong Kong
Daily cigarette smokers in Hong Kong were motivational hardening, but not dependence hardening. Effective tobacco control policies and interventions are warranted to motivate quitting to further reduce smoking prevalence
Perception of heated tobacco products and support for regulations
Lower support for HTP regulations and a total ban on sale were associated with perceptions of reduced harm and effectiveness for quitting CCs of HTPs in Hong Kong
High Perceived Susceptibility to and Severity of Covid-19 in Smokers Are Associated with Quitting-Related Behaviors
A growing body of evidence shows smoking is a risk factor for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). We examined the associations of quitting-related behaviors with perceived susceptibility to and severity of COVID-19 in smokers. We conducted a telephone survey of 659 community-based adult smokers (81.7% male) in Hong Kong, where there was no lockdown. Exposure variables were perceptions that smoking can increase the risk of contracting COVID-19 (percei…
Circumventing tobacco control and safety policies to promote waterpipe use in smoking venues
The study provides preliminary evidence indicating the ineffectiveness of current tobacco control policy on WPS. Due to its risks to health and safety, and the need to sustain tobacco control efforts for their intended purpose, waterpipe-specific regulations and stricter surveillance on waterpipe sales and promotion are urgently required
