Trends in cocaine use and cocaine-related harms in Ireland
Multiple databases show significant increases in cocaine-related harm since 2000. Responding to cocaine-related health problems and prevention efforts focused on cocaine constitute a public health priority
Early and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drug use in early adulthood in Ireland
Age at first alcohol and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict substance use in early adulthood when considered jointly in extensively adjusted models. These findings highlight the continued urgent need for public health interventions that address factors associated with early alcohol use and support adolescents who use alcohol in a high-risk manner given their elevated risk of progression to more serious substance use as adults
Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) use and harms in Ireland
These data suggest that HHC has become a prominent feature of the Irish drug landscape. Given its harm potential, it will be important to monitor HHC use and related health harms
Relationships between childhood adversity and inflammatory biomarkers in adulthood
This study provides evidence that ACE exposure may be associated with more pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic profiles in adulthood. Associations differed according to ACE subtype, and sex differences exist, which may influence cardiometabolic risk
Association of adverse childhood experiences with lipid profiles and atherogenic risk indices in a middle-to-older aged population
This study provides evidence that ACEs are common among older adults in Ireland and are associated with unfavourable lipid profiles and derived atherogenic risk indices
Factors associated with public awareness of the relationship between alcohol use and breast cancer risk
As breast cancer is a prevalent disease among women in Ireland, it is essential that the public, in particular women who drink, are made aware of this association. Public health messages that highlight the health risks associated with alcohol use, and which target individuals with lower educational levels, are warranted
Relationships between age at first substance use and persistence of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder
Among people who report past cannabis use, it is those with a more precocious pattern of early use of substances, including alcohol, and especially tobacco and cannabis, who are more likely to report ongoing, heavy and problematic cannabis use. Secondary prevention initiatives should prioritise people with a pattern of very early onset substance use
Drinking patterns and the distribution of alcohol-related harms in Ireland
Our results indicate that the majority of alcohol consumption and related harms in the Irish population are accounted for by low- and moderate-risk drinkers, and specifically by those who engage in heavy episodic drinking. A population-based approach to reducing alcohol-related harm is most appropriate in the Irish context. Immediate implementation of the measures in the Public Health (Alcohol) Act (2018) is necessary to reduce alcohol-related ha…
Optimal central obesity measurement site for assessing cardiometabolic and type 2 diabetes risk in middle-aged adults
Assessing cardiometabolic risk in middle-aged adults using body mass index and waist-height ratio. Are two indices better than one
