  • Trusted agents as knowledge translation mechanisms in flood disaster warning

    Open Access•I-Chun Chen, Pi-Chu Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2026

When institutional warning channels fail to convert hazard knowledge into protective action, community-embedded volunteers become critical intermediaries for reaching socially vulnerable populations. Drawing on an embedded qualitative case study of the 2025 Matai'an Stream landslide-dam overflow in Hualien, Taiwan — an event that generated nineteen official alerts yet produced spatially uneven evacuation outcomes — this study identifies three seq…

  • Governance, financing, and cultural safety in Taiwan’s indigenous long-term care

Open Access•Hsin-Tzu Lin, Huey-Fen Su et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2026

Taiwan’s Indigenous communities face profound health inequities driven by colonial legacies, rural ageing, and structurally misaligned long-term care policies. Life expectancy gaps approach 12 years compared to the general population. Indigenous Cultural Health Stations (ICHS; Wenjian Stations) provide community-based support for older adults, yet are constrained by fragmented funding cycles, undervalued cultural labour, and governance arrangemen…

  • Beyond the diamond

Open Access•Hsin-Hung Ho, C Lee et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2026

Aimd Taiwan's high-stakes professional baseball culture − where early specialisation curtails credentials and masculine norms valorise stoicism − retired Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) elites’ pivots to non-sport careers expose profound transition precarity, a phenomenon still little explored in East Asian settings. This interpretative phenomenological analysis, drawing on Bourdieu's theory of practice, explores how seven such retire…

  • University-community partnerships for sustainable health

    I-Chun Chen, Anuchit Phanumartwiwath•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Purpose This study aims to examine how university-led volunteer initiatives, such as Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s 2024 Community Day of Service, promote sustainable health and community well-being by addressing social determinants of health within the voluntary and community sector. Design/methodology/approach Thematic analysis was conducted on data from semi-structured interviews with 18 stakeholders (12 volunteers, 5 organizers a…

  • Reframing the Itaewon crowd crush

    I-Chun Chen•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2025

Purpose This paper uses Charles Perrow’s normal accident theory (NAT) to analyze the 2022 Itaewon Halloween crowd crush, revealing systemic vulnerabilities and organizational failures involved in the disaster. It examines how cultural factors, such as deference to authority and collectivism, worsened the event, providing insights for managing high-risk systems to avert future tragedies. The study aims to deliver actionable strategies for improvin…

  • Optimizing methadone dose adjustment in patients with opioid use disorder

    Open Access•P C Liu, Po-Shen Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

We developed a model for methadone dose adjustment in patients with opioid use disorders. By integrating urine opiate levels, treatment adherence, and likelihood of treatment discontinuation, the model could suggest automatic adjustment of the methadone dose, particularly when face-to-face encounters are impractical

  • Insights from a community-based survey on factors influencing acceptance and uptake of Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) as a Covid-19 antiviral medication in Singapore

Open Access•Sheng En Alexius Matthias Soh, Wei Ling Brenda Ong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The majority of our respondents would take Paxlovid if it was prescribed to them, but a much smaller proportion would have the initiative to request for this. Key factors that may influence uptake are COVID-19 threat perceptions, trust in healthcare and government, and perceptions of the drug's side effects and cost

  • An Investigation of Airborne Bioaerosols and Endotoxins Present in Indoor Traditional Wet Markets before and after Operation in Taiwan

    Open Access•Da-Jiun Wei, Wen‐Te Liu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Customers in Taiwan prefer to purchase fresh foods and household supplies at indoor traditional wet markets (TWMs). The health risk to indoor TWM staff exposed to bioaerosols needs to be evaluated, since these workers spend long periods of time in the market for stall preparation, selling, and stall cleaning. This study investigated the bioaerosols present in two indoor TWMs. The results showed that the cleaning process at Market A after operatio…

  • The Autonomic Progress Bar Motivates Treatment Completion for Patients of Stimulant Use Disorder and Cannabis Use Disorder

    Open Access•I‐Chun Chen, I-Chun Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Background: The intrinsic motivation behind the "need to complete" is more influential than external incentives. We introduced a novel progress-bar tool to motivate the completion of programs designed to treat stimulant and cannabis use disorders. We further examined the effectiveness of the progress bar's scoring approach in forecasting consistently negative urine tests. Methods: This study's participants included 568 patients with stimulant, am…

  • Boosting treatment stabilization in patients of amphetamine-type stimulant use disorder

  • Effect of “Mood That Day” on Pharmacists' Job and Career Satisfaction

    Open Access•Jean M B Woodward, I‐Chun Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

We speculated that mood would affect responses to global measures of job and career satisfaction. We randomly selected 692 pharmacists from the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners' mailing list. After two follow-up mailings, 389 questionnaires were received for a usable rate of 56.9%. "Good day" pharmacists were more satisfied with their jobs and careers than "typical day" pharmacists, supporting the contention that global satisfaction indicators re…
