  • Serial verbs in English: An RRG analysis of catenative verb constructions

    John R Roberts•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2012

Serial verb constructions (SVCs) are found in Creole languages and in the languages of West Africa, Southeast Asia, Amazonia, Oceania, and New Guinea. In this article we examine catenative verb constructions (CVCs) in English from a Role and Reference Grammar perspective and compare them with SVCs. More specifically, based on the set of syntactic and semantic properties of SVCs proposed by Kroeger (2004: 229–230), it will be demonstrated that CVC…

Christopher M Armitage, first book Christopher M Armitage et al.•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2009

Bibliographies of secondary sources have presumably several purposes, not the least of which is enabling readers to trace the development of reputation and consequent critical approaches to their subjects. In these two bibliographies-of the bold bad Raleigh and the saintly Herbert-very different, almost antithetical, strategies have been used to interesting effect, justified by the authors, and presented for the use of scholars in different fields…

  • New Perspectives on the Seventeenth-Century English Religious Lyric

    John R Roberts, Margo Swiss•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2009

Written by some of the most prominent scholars in seventeenth-century studies, this unified collection of twelve original essays offers new perspectives on the English religious lyric. It does so by addressing in particular three important issues concerning seventeenth-century devotional poetry: Is the religious lyric a genre, or is it only a lyric poem on a religious theme? When we say "religious" lyric, are we sometimes too restrictive and narr…

    Open Access•John R Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1990•Cited by: 9•References: 5

In this article data are presented from the Amele language and a number of other different Papuan languages to show that in these languages the medial verb form is marked for a binary distinction of realis versus irrealis modality. Furthermore it is demonstrated that in these languages the realis-irrealis distinction interacts with categories of tense and mood marked on the fina! verb in such a way as to divide them into the two basic domains of …

John R Roberts, Gale H Carrithers et al.•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•1969

The aim of this bibliography is to provide students of John Donne with a much needed research tool.
