  • Decolonizing the English Literary Curriculum

Open Access•Paul Giles, Joe Cleary et al.•BOOK•Decolonizing the English Literary…•2023

George Floyd's death on May 25th 2020 marked a watershed in reactions to anti-Black racism in the United States and elsewhere. Intense demonstrations around the world followed. Within literary studies, the demonstrations accelerated the scrutiny of the literary curriculum, the need to diversify the curriculum, and the need to incorporate more Black writers. Decolonizing the English Literary Curriculum is a major collection that aims to address th…

  • Coloniality, reframing and diversity in New Testament Apocrypha: More Noncanonical Scriptures, volume 2

    Open Access•Raymond Charles•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2023•References: 1

The author's aim in this review article is to highlight a few points that he finds intriguing, especially with regard to the classification of the texts and the question of genre, in the second volume of New Testament Apocrypha: More Noncanonical Scriptures, edited by Tony Burke and published by Eerdmans in 2020. He also reflects on what the process of rereading and reframing the narratives present in these texts entails. Choosing which texts to …

  • Paul and Plutarch on Religion

    Raymond Charles, Ronald Charles•ARTICLE•Early Christianity•2017

    Open Access•Raymond Charles, Ronald Charles•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2016•References: 9

The aim of this article is to show the advantage of submitting one biblical text to a variety of methodological approaches that will allow a reader to have a fuller understanding of the text. This article proposes to read a particular Pauline text (1 Corinthians 5:1-5) by using different methodological approaches that have been adopted and developed in biblical studies (the historical-critical approach, the "social-scientific" approach, the femin…

  • Interpreting the Book of Revelation in the Haitian Context

    Raymond Charles, Ronald Charles•ARTICLE•Black Theology•2011

The Book of Revelation is an ambiguous, de-colonizing text that is normally read in Haiti, so as to re-colonize. The present study rejects the standard colonizing reading and proposes a postcolonial reading in the Haitian context. The proposed reading is intended to help the Christian churches in Haiti articulate a form of political-religious resistance to the pretensions to divinization that modern neo-colonial forces impose on the people. This …

  • Q as a Question from a Postcolonial Point of View

    Raymond Charles, Ronald Charles•ARTICLE•Black Theology•2009

This paper reviews the second half of Excavating Q: The History and Setting of The Sayings Gospel by John S. Kloppenborg. The aim is to argue that, despite Kloppenborg's accurate criticism of biblical scholarship as it relates to Q and Christian origins, his project articulates latent ideological expectations that are unacceptable from a postcolonial point of view. He fails to address such issues as race and ideology in the formation of modern bi…

  • Hybridity and the Letter of Aristeas

Raymond Charles, Ronald Charles•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2009

This paper explores how the complex notion of hybridity, as developed by Homi K. Bhabha, can shed light on the Letter of Aristeas. Throughout the narrative of this ancient Jewish tale one finds a risky attempt on the part of the author to incorporate the best aspects of the two cultures and modes of thinking—Judaism and Hellenism—within which his community were living in Alexandria. In order to understand the dynamics of the hybrid condition of A…
