Stateness under Disputed Sovereignty
Gilgit–Baltistan (GB) occupies a constitutional limbo. It is administered by Pakistan, yet its legal status remains tied to the Kashmir dispute between Pakistan and India, even as Pakistan has steadily expanded its administrative and developmental incorporation. Drawing on Ayoob’s framework of stateness, we ask how GB’s youth interpret this limbo as a state-building strategy under disputed sovereignty, and what their narratives reveal about the r…
Gilgit-Baltistan
This paper offers a subaltern reading of Gilgit-Baltistan’s (GB) historical trajectory, arguing that the region’s 1947 “liberation” from Dogra rule is an essential foundation for internal self-determination within Pakistan. While conventional accounts often subsume GB into the broader Kashmir dispute, local subaltern perspectives reveal distinct political identities predating colonial and Dogra domination. By reclaiming these marginalized histori…

Context-Bounded Subaltern Realism
Mohammed Ayoob’s subaltern realism argues that postcolonial states’ behavior is shaped by colonial legacies, internal insecurities, and external pressures from major power interventions, as well as from regional disputes. This framework was developed by Ayoob to explain conflict dynamics in the “Third World/postcolonial/developing/Global South” and, more specifically, as Ayoob terms them, subaltern states. This study extends Ayoob’s argument in t…
"The "Hub-and-Spokes Plus Model
The unprecedented rise in China's politico-economic prowess, its assertive activities in the South China Sea, and its heightened competition with the United States, have prompted a reassessment of the pre-existing US- led alliance structures in the Indo-Pacific Region (IPR). In addition to bilateralism and multilateralism, a new framework has been added to the region's security architecture, i. e., the Hub-and-Spokes Plus Model (HSPM). The HSPM i…
Conceptualising a Heterarchical Regional Security Complex
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) is one of the most prominent security arrangements to have emerged in the Indo-Pacific during the 21st century. This dialogue provides its founding members – the United States (US), India, Japan and Australia – with a platform to counteract the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) rising regional and global stature. The QUAD can be conceptualised as a Heterarchical Regional Security Complex (HRSC), a novel…
The association of South East Asian Nations (Asean)
The term ‘security community’ refers to the development of a regional consensus of shunning war as a means of settling disputes among participant states. Assuming this basic premise of a security community, this article positions ASEAN as a unique security community by arguing that it is contingent upon the socio-cultural norms practiced in ASEAN member states’ societies. The conceptual framework of a traditional security community is inapplicabl…
Strategic culture reconceptualized
Political culture, political science and identity politics
Culture has become a buzz word in political science, but its meaning and boundaries are very much contested. Some would ascribe a deterministic logic to culture, arguing that behaviour is solely dependent on cultural factors. Others, based on theories of rational decision-making, would deny this. Howard Wiarda's book occupies the middle ground between these two extremes, arguing that behaviour is partly explained by culture and partly by rational…
