Engaged Research in a Hurry
Since 2017, the United States has dramatically decreased its budget for refugee resettlement, increasing barriers to services that help refugees meet their basic needs. For us, as anthropologists, given the relationships that are cultivated through long-term ethnographic research, it is impossible to ignore the detrimental effects of national policy changes in a political environment that is unlikely to change due to our policy recommendations. I…
Memorialization as a Mechanism of Power in the Present
Objective The objectives of this article are to understand how national narratives are created and maintained, which discourses are utilized, and what inhibits people from understanding perspectives divergent from their own within the context of postarmed conflict processes of transitional justice. Through examining these objectives, I outline what studies of transitional justice can contribute to understandings of Confederate memory in the Unite…

Evaluating Understandings of State and Federal Pandemic Policies
This article addresses underlying inequities for resettling refugees that have been exposed by COVID-19, including language barriers and access to public health information, food, health care, housing, and employment. It also speaks to theoretical concerns about the role of structural forces in creating increased health risks for vulnerable populations. Fieldwork that began in May 2020 investigated the extent to which refugees in Tampa understand…
A Place at the Well
Achieving cleaner water for rural and suburban communities in a sustainable way requires approaches tailored to the unique socioeconomic, ecological, and historic contexts embedded in a particular community and place. Water quality trading (WQT) is a payment for ecosystem services style policy that is currently popular across North America as a mechanism to reduce water pollution from rural communities. Yet this approach is failing to generate ma…

Critical Conversations About Transitional Justice in Nepal
This article, and its collaboratively paired article written solely by victim-activists (Bhandari, Chaudhary, and Chaudhary 2018 in this special issue), focus on the families of people who were forcibly disappeared during Nepal's decade-long internal armed conflict and their continued exclusion from processes of transitional justice. In this article, I highlight my continued conversations with victim-activists after I returned to the United State…
Intersectionality as Locality
Transitional justice policy, although predicated on an ideology of transition, often homogenizes victims and fails to respond to victims’ diverse and dynamic needs during the ‘transitional period.’ In this article, based on 14 months of ethnographic research in Nepal, I examine the perceptions and experiences of adults who were children when their fathers were killed or disappeared during the decade-long internal armed conflict between the Commun…
Conflict over Transitional Justice in Nepal
A decade after Nepal's internal armed conflict came to an end its victims are still campaigning for redress. Krista Billingsley describes recent demonstrations in Kathmandu and charts the long road toward transitional justice
