The Acquisition of Syntactic Structures in Typical and Atypical Language Development: Insights from Growing Trees and Syntactic Cartography in a New Sentence Repetition Task
This study presents a newly developed Sentence Repetition Task/SRT as a tool designed to investigate the acquisition of different syntactic structures in children with typical development (TD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The tool is grounded in the Growing Trees (GT, henceforth) approach, which assumes that developmental progression reflects the hierarchical growth of the syntactic tree, as described in cartographic analyses of cla…
Discourse markers in L1 and L2 Italian: A cartographic analysis of the sentence-internal position
This article compares the use of discourse markers (DMs) in Italian as a second language (L2) produced by Belgian-Dutch learners, with the DMs produced by Italian native (L1) speakers. The quantitative analysis of the data shows that L1 speakers produce more DMs than L2 speakers, whereas the comparison between the levels of proficiency in L2 reveals an effect of the type of task on the frequency of DMs. From the qualitative analysis, interesting …
A-Topics in Italian/Romance and the Cartography of Children’s Inventions
The paper has a specific and focused aim: to unveil a possible route to DOM, the crosslinguistically widely attested phenomenon whereby direct objects are introduced by a preposition, with interpretive constraints. The prepositional marker is ‘a’ in Italian and in (the majority of) Romance. The investigation is based on both comparative data from Romance and on some relevant experimental results from the acquisition of Italian involving a-Topics.…
Growing trees: The acquisition of the left periphery
We suggest here a Growing Trees approach for the description of the acquisition of various syntactic structures in Hebrew, based on the main results reported in Friedmann and Reznick (this volume) and on our own research on a corpus of natural productions. The heart of our account is that stages of acquisition follow the geometry of the syntactic tree, along the lines of the cartographic analysis of the clause, with early stages of acquisition co…
Children’s subjects in Clitic Left Dislocations in Italian
The study examined the production of subjects by Italian-speaking children in different pragmatic contexts which elicited the use of Clitic Left Dislocations (ClLD), pronoun structures and passives. The analysis takes into account the data from Belletti & Manetti (2019) and focuses on the use of lexical and null subjects on the basis of the discourse conditions provided in two elicited production experiments. The results showed that children are …
(A-)Topics and animacy
The aim of this paper is twofold: first, we intend to contribute to the debate on the identification of the features to which syntactic locality expressed in terms of the featural Relativized Minimality/ fRM principle appears to be sensitive (Rizzi 2004; Friedmann, Belletti & Rizzi 2009); second, we aim at providing a better characterization of the distributional and interpretive properties of the process of a-marking in the Topic position of the…

(Past) Participle Agreement
The chapter offers an overview of the analysis of past participle agreement, a central phenomenon in Romance, addressed here in a comparative perspective, with special reference to Italian and French. The theoretical issues raised by the phenomenon are at the core of the chapter, from the influential account first developed by Kayne (1989) in terms of Spec–Head agreement, to the more recent implementations through the Agree relation inspired by m…

Theoretical and developmental issues in the syntax of subjects: Evidence from near-native Italian
Structures and Beyond: The Cartography of Syntactic Structures, Volume 3
Adriana Belletti here collects work presented by top scholars at a workshop at the University of Siena in connection with a visit by Noam Chomsky. These eight articles go beyond strictly mapping syntactic properties, touching on broader theoretical questions related to Chomsky’s Minimalist Program in particular. The reputation of the contributors, combined with the collection of cutting-edge research in one place, will interest scholars and stude…

Aspects of the Low IP Area
This chapter reconsiders and develops a proposal presented in Belletti (2001). The discussion that follows leaves the core insight of the original proposal essentially unchanged, although some aspects of the implementation are revised in a way that leads to changes in some areas; the overall empirical coverage of the proposal itself is also widened. Recent studies on the cartography of the left periphery of the clause, started with Rizzi (1997) a…
On Nature and Language
In On Nature and Language Noam Chomsky develops his thinking on the relation between language, mind and brain, integrating current research in linguistics into the burgeoning field of neuroscience. This 2002 volume begins with a lucid introduction by the editors Adriana Belletti and Luigi Rizzi. This is followed by some of Chomsky's writings on these themes, together with a penetrating interview in which Chomsky provides the clearest and most ele…

On the Anaphoric Status of the Reciprocal Construction in Italian
The article addresses the status of the reciprocal construction in Italian and derives its anaphoric status with respect to principle A of the Binding theory module of grammar, from its complex syntax. A parallel is drawn with other structures involving different types of floating quantifiers

The Syntax of “Ne”: Some Theoretical Implications
The article addresses the study of the cliticization properties of Italian clitic "ne", showing that its distribution is due to principled reasons within the theory of syntax, only movement of the clitic from a governed postverbal position being allowed. A comparison between cliticization from a postverbal direct object and postverbal subjects of different nature is assessed in detail
