On the Subjectless “Pseudo-Passive” in Standard Dutch and the Semantics of Background Agents
In a typical Dutch sentence such as 1, the so-called “agent of the action” is referred to with a definite nounphrase which traditionally is both “grammatical subject” (with which the verb “agrees in person and number”) and “topic”—i.e., old information, hence unstressed and in initial position: 1. De jongens fluiten the boys whistle “The boys whistle/are whistling.”
