Creating a Bloodbath by Statistical Manipulation
Population Redistribution in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Like a number of other developing countries the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has deemed its pattern of settlement to be in need of radical intervention. This article analyzes the post-1975 population redistribution program in Vietnam. After examining the goals and instruments of the program it evaluates its demographic and geographic efficiency and its social and economic costs. Information on interprovincial migration flows derived from the dai…
Ethnic Differences in Adaptation: Sino- Vietnamese Refugees in the United States
This article examines the differences in adaptive behavior manifested by Sino-Vietnamese and ethnic Vietnamese refugees resettled in two major areas of the United States. Contingency analyses of a survey of 602 refugees interviewed in Illinois and California confirm the disadvantage of the Chinese group with respect to both acculturation and economic self-sufficiency variables. Although the two groups differ statistically in their pre-arrival cha…

Indochinese Resettlement in the United States
Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the flow of Southeast Asian refugees into the U.S., and these refugees are becoming increasingly concentrated in a small number of Western states. This distribution is the result of the refugees’high interstate mobility and of the family reunification criterion used to admit and resettle refugees. The states in which the refugees are concentrating tend to have high public assistance benefit levels, l…
Constrained Choice and Migration
Inmigration flows of a sample of applicants to British universities were analyzed in terms of simple pull models of migration, using linear regressions to relate flow magnitude to various measurable aspects of destination universities. The chosen measures fell into two groups: aggregate measures of ordered preferences for the potential destinations, and objective characteristics of the destinations deemed to be relevant to university choice. Path…
Indochinese Settlement Patterns in Orange County
Spatial Choice and Constraints on Behavior
This paper first examines the reasons for the limited success of empirical studies of movement behavior in documenting a consistent relationship between spatial behavior and its psychological antecedents. It then proposes an integrated conceptual framework to incorporate the mediating and determining role of constraints on spatial behavior. It is argued that acceptance of the implicit assumptions of utility maximization and volitional control has…
Thai Migration to Los Angeles
My aim in this paper is to account for the selectivity of the Thai migration stream to the United States and to analyze the factors underlying decisions and destination choices of migrants so that their fast-growing influx and their regional concentration in the Lost Angeles area may be better understood. The arrival in the United States of a significant number of Thai aliens is a recent phenomenon that has yet to be thoroughly documented. Little…
