  • Desertification Risk

Open Access•Fatima‐Ezzahrae Imam, Daniela Smiraglia et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Desertification, driven by climatic and anthropogenic factors, is one of the most pressing global environmental challenges, causing significant economic, ecological, and social consequences. A bibliometric analysis was performed to identify research trends and gaps in the desertification risk topic. Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny software were employed to analyse patterns in research publications. The analysis findings of the 864 research papers pu…

  • Land consumption in Italy

Open Access•Andrea Strollo, Daniela Smiraglia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

This paper illustrates a land consumption map for Italy (year 2017) at a scale 1:1,300,000, and the assessment of its changes (2012–2017). We define land consumption as the replacement of a non-artificial land cover to an artificial land cover, both permanent and no-permanent. The maps are a 10 m spatial resolution raster, produced by photointerpretation of very high resolution images and semiautomatic classification of high resolution remote sen…

  • Multi-temporal land use and cover changing analysis

Elena Brunori, Luca Salvati et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Human activity shapes the levels of anthropogenic pressure that depend on the land management method adopted. This has a fundamental role in the transformation of traditional landscapes. This study focuses on a representative region of the Mediterranean area with the objective to analyse the landscape’s dynamics, to detect the spatial arrangement of class patches, to identify the main agroecosystem characters and to provide a framework to assess …

  • Map of Long-Term Changes in Land Sensitivity to Degradation of Italy

Open Access•Luca Salvati, Daniela Smiraglia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2014

The study introduces a map of the long-term changes in the level of land sensitivity to degradation for Italy, presented at a scale of 1:1,300,000. According to the Environmental Sensitive Area (ESA) approach, the national territory was divided into different classes of land sensitivity by assigning a score based on the observed changes in four themes (climate, soil, vegetation and land management) related to land degradation processes. The obser…

  • Land units map of Italy

Open Access•Daniela Smiraglia, Giulia Capotorti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

In this paper we present the land units map of Italy, covering an area of ca. 300, 000 km-super-2 between 47°05′ N-35°29′ N and 6°37′ E-18°31′ E. The map was created by means of a Geographic Information System (GIS) and is based on the overlay of various thematic maps according to a hierarchical classification. The map scale is 1:250, 000, with a minimum mapping unit of 50 ha. The GIS integration of different layers, covering the main environment…
