From lapping waters to marshy lands and back: Quaternary environmental dynamics of the North Caspian inferred from the Raigorod site and contemporary regional correlations
The World of Middle Palaeolithic Humans of the Donbass and Azov Regions
The Middle Paleolithic, as an epoch in the development of human society, was characterized by the homeostasis between the socio-cultural systems and their natural environments. Middle Paleolithic сommunities settled in the areas with the most favorable combinations of basic resources. At that time, almost the entire territory of the southern part of the Russian Plain, including the Donbass and Azov regions, was dominated by steppe landscapes. In …
Distribution of cultural remains along the horizons of the Rozhok I site: Reconstruction of Hunting Strategy and Settlement Structures
The Rozhok I is a unique site of the Middle Paleolithic of the Southern Russian Plain. Its scientific potential as an object of archaeological heritage and the archaeological collections collected by N.D. Praslov in 1961-1962 is multifaceted. This publication provides detailed information on the spatial distribution of cultural remains in the horizons of the site, and reconstructions of settlement. horizons (cultural layers) varies. Their signifi…
Discovery of Mammuthus cf. intermedius Jourdan, 1861 Skeleton, from Singil Deposits near the Lenino Village (Lower Volga, Russian Federation) and its Paleontological and Archaeological Signifi cance
The find of an incomplete skeleton of the mammoth Mammuthus cf. intermedius near the Lenino village (Yenotayevka district, Astrakhan region) is described. The bones occurred in the layer of continental sandy deposits of the Singil regression (end of the Middle Neopleistocene). The skeletal remains belong to a female with an individual age of 35—40 years. This find allows us to clarify the species diversity of elephants that inhabited the Lower Vo…
Plio-Pleistocene Small Mammal-Based Biochronology of Eastern Anatolia and Transcaucasus
The known Plio-Pleistocene mammalian record, mainly represented by small mammals, and its biotic and geological context in the vast region of Eastern Turkey and Transcaucasus provides a sound base for regional biochronology. Recently obtained faunal associations and the main evolutionary lineages found in the region support direct correlations to the European (ELMA/MN/MQ) and the Eastern European (faunal complexes/MQR-MNR) biochronological system…
Nikolaevo-Otradnoye II—A New Early and Middle Paleolithic Site in the Northeastern Azov Region
Bone Artifacts from the Middle Palaeolithic Site of Rozhok I (Cultural Horizon VI) in the North-Eastern Azov Region
The multilayer site of Rozhok I is a reference object for the study of the Middle Palaeolithic in the south of the Russian Plain. The well-preserved cultural remains lying in a thick bed of loess-soil sediments may shed light on a number of questions regarding the chronology and cultural affinities of the regional Middle Palaeolithic industries, as well as the economic activity of their makers and the character of manufacturing technologies used …
Nikolaevo-Otradnoye II—A New Early and Middle Paleolithic Site in the Northeastern Azov Region
We describe materials from a new Paleolithic site, discovered in 2020 on the right bank of Mius estuary, near its confl uence with the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov, in the southern outskirts of the village of Nikolaevo-Otradnoye, which is in the Neklinovksky District of the Rostov Region. The clearing of a 10-meter-high river-bluff revealed a complex stratigraphy of subaqueous and subaerial Late and Middle Pleistocene rocks. Horizons with lith…
Pleistocene palaeoenvironments in the Lower Volga region (Russia): Insights from a comprehensive biostratigraphical study of the Seroglazovka locality
Late Middle—Early Late Pleistocene Mammoths from the Lower Don River Region (Russia)
The remains of “early” mammoths from a number of localities of the late Middle—early Late Pleistocene on the territory of the South of European Russia (the basin of the Don River, Rostov Region) are described. The description of the teeth and bones of a postcranial skeleton is given. Teeth characteristics (number of plates, lamellar frequency and enamel thickness) allow determining the finds as Mammuthus intermedius, described from the territory …
Middle Paleolithic Site Sukhaya Mechёtka: The Renewal of Complex Investigations
The Sukhaya Mechёtka site, located on the northern outskirts of Volgograd, has attracted the attention of Paleolithic researchers since its discovery in 1951 by geologists A.I.Koptev and M.N. Grishchenko. The materials of the site - a collection of stone products currently kept at the MAE RAS, and chronostratigraphic information – can be considered as perfect by standards of open Paleolithic complexes. To a large extent, the site acquired such a …
Biostratigraphical investigations as a tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Neopleistocene (Middle-Upper Pleistocene) at Kosika, Lower Volga, Russia
Evolution of the European regional large mammals assemblages in the end of the Middle Pleistocene – The first half of the Late Pleistocene (MIS 6–MIS 4)
Pliocene – Early Pleistocene history of the Euphrates valley applied to Late Cenozoic environment of the northern Arabian Plate and its surrounding, eastern Turkey
The Early Pleistocene site of Kermek in western Ciscaucasia (southern Russia): Stratigraphy, biotic record and lithic industry (preliminary results)
Teeth of early generations of Early Pleistocene elephants (Mammalia, Elephantidae) from Sinyaya Balka/Bogatyri site (Sea of Azov Region, Russia)
