  • The Collapse of American Philosophical Naturalism (1920-50)

    Dale Riepe•ARTICLE•Telos•1969

Philosophical naturalism in the 1960's has a much different appearance than it had in the 1940's when it had reached its peak of influence. Tumultuous changes both at home and abroad brought with them a biting wind of criticism that bared the weaknesses of this now infirm philosophy. The heart of naturalism is its methodology, so I shall discuss its shortcomings at the beginning and how it infected its total perspective. First, it may now be seen…

  • The Function of Literature

    Dale Riepe•ARTICLE•Telos•1969

Christopher Caudwell was the foremost marxist aesthetician to write in English. His major contribution was a theory of the function of literature, most of which appeared in his last work, Illusion and Reality (1937). Caudwell, who could not afford to attend the university, spent whatever time he could spare in the last three years of his life (he was killed in Spain in 1937 fighting for the Loyalists) studying the marxist classics and writing. Pa…

  • Flexible Scientific Naturalism and Dialectical Fundamentalism

    Open Access•Dale Riepe•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1958•Citada por: 2

By dialectical fundamentalism I mean the view that maintains the inerrancy of the orthodox classical scriptures of dialectical materialism; by flexible scientific naturalism I mean the view recognizing the past heuristic value of dialectical materialism, but also the realization for the need to develop and change it along lines suggested by complementary philosophies relevant to the scientific outlook

  • Selected Chronology of Recent Japanese Philosophy (1868-1963)

    Dale Riepe•ARTICLE•Philosophy East and West•1965•Citada por: 1

JAPANESE PHILOSOPHY is scarcely known to philosophers and scholars in the English-speaking world. Translations of Japanese philosophical works in English are practically nil. Only recently has a single volume of Nishida Kitar6 been translated into English, just fifty years after it was written. Such a state of affairs in world philosophy is lamentable and intolerable. Therefore I propose to list some seminal books of Japanese philosophy from 1868…
