  • Articulatory Correlates of Prosodic Control: Emotion and Emphasis

    Open Access•Donna Erickson, Osamu Fujimura et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1998•Cited by: 5•References: 29

This study examines mandibular correlates of prosodic control in nonread dialog exchanges, in which the subject is asked to repeat the same correction of one digit in a three-digit sequence consisting of “five” or “nine” followed by “Pine Street.” Articulatory and acoustic data were collected for four speakers of American English at the X-ray Microbeam Facilities at the University of Wisconsin. Jaw opening was measured as vertical jaw position at…

  • Allophonic variation in English /l/ and its implications for phonetic implementation

    Open Access•Richard Sproat, Osamu Fujimura•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•1993•Cited by: 82•References: 17

  • Vocal Physiology: Voice Production, Mechanisms and Functions

    William S-y Wang, Wei‐shu Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1989

  • Evaluating the task dynamics model

    Open Access•Osamu Fujimura•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•1986•Cited by: 1

  • Perception of Stop Consonants with Conflicting Transitional Cues: A Cross-Linguistic Study

    Open Access•Osamu Fujimura, Marian J Macchi et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1978•Cited by: 15•References: 4

In vowel-consonant-vowel (VCV) utterances, the place of articulation of the consonant is cued by formant transitions both out of the first vowel and into the second vowel. When the two transitions provide conflicting place cues, which dominates perception? The present experiment compared Japanese and American English listeners' perceptions of VCV stimuli in which the consonantal transitions conflicted. Conflicting transition stimuli were created …

  • An effect of linguistic experience: The discrimination of [r] and [l] by native speakers of Japanese and English

    Open Access•Kuniko Miyawaki, James J Jenkins et al.•ARTICLE•Perception & Psychophysics•1975

  • Computational processing of palatographic patterns

    Open Access•Osamu Fujimura, Itaru F Tatsumi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•1973•Cited by: 5

  • On the Second Spectral Peak of Front Vowels: A Perceptual Study of the Role of the Second and Third Formants

    Open Access•Osamu Fujimura•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1967•Cited by: 2•References: 4

A set of vowel stimuli with different values of mean and separation of the second and third formant frequencies were synthesized by means of series-connected resonant circuits, and formal listening tests were conducted where Swedish subjects identified each stimulus as one of three syllables consisting of a long close front vowel, /i : /, /y : /, or /u :/. The commonly accepted notion of representing the vowel quality in a two-dimensional space i…
